“I have a career, and I finally have what I want.”

JC starts eating again, avoiding my gaze while I finish making my pancake. By the time I start eating, he’s finished and is carrying his plate to the sink to wash. He reaches over and takes the pan and spatula, washing them. I’m astonished because when we were together, he would stack dishes in the sink and leave them for me.

“You’ve become domestic since we were last together.”

“I’ve become a lot of things since we were together. I’ve changed, matured. I hope you can see that.”

“I do, and I just want to have a good working relationship with you.”

“Is that all you want?”

“What else is there?”

“Friends. If I can’t have you for myself, then I at least want to be friends.”

“JC, I’m not sure that’s a good idea. I don’t know how Noah would feel about it, especially if you get divorced. You’re no threat now that you’re married.”

“Is he worried?”

“I doubt it. He didn’t seem worried when I told him you’re my boss.”

“Then why wouldn’t it be a good idea if he doesn’t care?”

“I just don’t.”

I realize he hasn’t touched the plate of strawberries I left on the counter. I push the plate over to him, and he selects one.

“I’d love to feed these to you.”

“Definitely not.”

“Why not?”

“It’s too, too intimate.”

My face begins to warm because we spent a good amount of time feeding each other when we lived together.

“You’re blushing.”

“Because it’s embarrassing.”

I see the wheels turning in his head, and I wait.

“Why because it was so sensual when we did it before?”

“JC, do you want to fuck me?” I blurt out.

I watch his jaw drop as he ponders what I’ve just asked him. He doesn’t have to say yes because it’s written all over his face. He does.

“I’m almost shocked that you asked that, but if you want to know, yes.”

“You do know that isn’t going to happen. We’ve been there done that.”

“So, if we were both single, you wouldn’t consider it?”

“But we’re not. You’re married, and I’m going to be married.”

“Maybe there will be a time you’re not married. I’m considering myself already divorced.”
