“Thanks for the vote of confidence. I love Noah, and I hope we stay married until death do us part.”

“You believe in the fairytale. I believe in reality. Things happen to drive people apart.”

“I think we have a good shot at making it.”

As I spoke those words, something niggled at my brain. Noah was acting strangely, and maybe what he had to tell me when he got home would drive us apart. But it was something that would make JC work even harder to get me into bed with him. He would put doubts in my mind.

“It’s after four. Do you want to watch TV for a little while?”

“Actually, I was wondering if I could take a nap on the couch? I think all this starch and sugar is making me sleepy.”

“If you want to, be my guest. I probably should do that same. I could wake you at six.”

“That’s perfect.”

He heads to the couch and kicks off his sneakers. I go to my bedroom and stretch out on the bed but forget to set the alarm for six. I don’t know what time it is when I smell something wonderful and feel a hand on my shoulder.

I open my eyes to see JC touching me, freshly showered. I’m wide awake and feeling defensive. I bolt up in bed, and he takes his hand away.

“I’m sorry. It’s almost 6:15; you didn’t wake me at 6:00.”

“Why is your hair wet?”

He looks at me sheepishly. “I hope you don’t mind. I needed a shower.”

“I have to go in myself.”

I want to get away from this awkward situation, especially since he’s in my bedroom, the bedroom where I make love to Noah. I get out of bed and go around him, practically slamming the door to the bathroom. I take a quick shower and when I come out, he’s no longer there but the lingering smell of his cologne is.

Within ten minutes, I dressed in my gray business suit. I put my hair in a ponytail and take another five minutes to work on my makeup. When I come out of the bedroom, he’s sitting on the stool at the breakfast bar eating strawberries I left on the counter.

“These are really good; you should try one.”

“I already brushed my teeth.”

“You’re missing out.”

“I’ll survive,” I say a bit annoyed.

“I’m taking the car service this morning. Do you want to come?”

Are you fucking kidding! Are you having them pick you up in front of my building?

“Since you’re going the same way, might as well.”

“Lexi, what’s wrong? Did I do something?”

“No, I’m just tired.”

“So, is that a no for burgers tomorrow?”

“I told you that Megan is coming to stay.”

“I can bear her wrath.”

“Can we discuss this later?”

One uncomfortable and silent car ride to the office later, I’m settled at my desk, coffee in hand. Fortunately, JC is not in the building long. He has two client meetings and has to go. I breathe a sigh of relief.
