“Are you joining me?”

“Yes, I’ll just have one.”

“You can eat more. You look thinner than when we were together.”

“I’m fine with one. I told you, I’m almost thirty, and I need to watch my weight.”

“Says who, Noah?”

JC sounds almost annoyed.

“No, Noah would never say that to me. He isn’t like that.”

“Some men are.”

“Well, he isn’t. It’s my decision.”

I watch as JC shovels a big forkful of pancake dripping with syrup in his mouth, and he closes his eyes.

“These are so good. Do you remember when you used to make them with bacon crumbled in the batter? So good.”

“Yes, I remember. I haven’t had that in a long time.”

“We should go for burgers on Friday. Noah’s not going to be home yet, is he?”

“No, but Megan will be here. She’s staying with me until Saturday morning.”

“We can all go out together.”

“JC, she’s still pissed at you.”

“It’s been years, and she hasn’t gotten over it yet?”

“I can’t force her.”

“Why is she still upset? You got over it.”

“It took me a long time, and I was a mess for a while. She saw how miserable I was during most of it.”

I didn’t want to reveal so much to him, but if JC didn’t know, he should. I want him to feel guilty about what he did even though it was years ago. I watch him closely and he seems to be deep in thought, his fork full of pancake in midair, dripping syrup onto his plate. JC puts his fork down and gives me a sad look.

“Can I tell you something?”

“Since we're so candid with each other these days, why not?”

“I knew I made a mistake as soon as I broke up with you.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me that? I lost you and quit my job all at once.”

“You didn’t have to quit.”

“Oh, and work for my former fiancé, who just broke up with me?”

“You could’ve moved to a different department.”

“You were the director of marketing. I would have seen you and had to answer to you no matter what department I was in. It was best to end it.”

“You could’ve had a career at Carver.”
