“I knew something was wrong that day. You weren’t yourself.”

“I’m sorry I was such a jerk to you in high school. I don’t think I ever told you that when we were together.”

“Frankly, I was shocked when you asked me out in college. I thought you hated me.”

JC takes a long pull from his beer, “Quite the opposite. We didn’t run in the same circles back then, and I didn’t have the courage to break out of that mold.”

“What do you mean by that? I wasn’t good enough for you?”

“Not at all. You were just different than the girls I dated. I was a jock; you were more academic.”

“You mean a nerd?”

“No, don’t twist my words. You didn’t care about sports; I did, but I also did well in academics. Did you forget?”

How could I, JC always bested me, and it annoyed me to no end. I didn’t date much in high school though there were plenty of guys who asked.

“Not at all.”

“You didn’t date much in high school. Why?”

Strangely, this conversation we’re having never took place in the years we dated. Maybe it was because JC didn’t care back then.

“I just didn’t. I wasn’t interested, I guess.”

“Did you lose your virginity before you got out of high school? I know I wasn’t your first.”

Yes, another question he never asked me when we were together. He probably assumed I had my share because we always had phenomenal sex. That usually comes with experience.

“Why are you asking me these things now? You never cared when we were together. As I recollect, you never even asked me how many men I slept with before you.”

“I don’t remember you ever asking me that question, either.”

“It didn’t matter to me and guessed you slept with quite a few.”

“So, getting back to my original question, were you a virgin when you graduated?”

“No, I wasn’t.”

His eyebrows lift because I think he’s surprised. He expected me to say yes.

“Who was it? And when?”

“You wouldn’t know him. He didn’t go to our school. In fact, he was in college.”

“Really? A college guy? When?”

“I was a senior, and he was my mother’s college roommate’s son, a junior at Dartmouth. I knew him throughout my life. I hadn’t seen him for a few years but when I did, it was instant attraction. He filled out in those intervening years. One thing led to another and before I knew it, I was naked, and we were having sex.”

“In your parent’s house?”

“In the basement, you know, in the family room. It started off innocently enough. We were watching a movie with the whole family. Everyone but us went to bed. He would be sleeping down there on the sofa and told me that he was tired. I started to leave, and he said I could go upstairs or join him.”

“Just like that, you joined him?”

“It was time already. He was hot, and we were alone.”

“He seduced you?”
