“Fine. You can change the restaurant then.”

“I already did. Marino’s.”

“I’m busy. I’ll come to your office at lunchtime.”

“Later then.”

I hang up and begin work. I spend part of the next two hours at a meeting with the art department. I have two projects I need graphics. By the time I come back to my office, it’s close to the time to leave for the restaurant. I take my compact out of my purse and touch up my makeup.

“You don’t need to do that.”

I look up to see JC standing at my door.

“That’s your opinion.”

“You’re beautiful. I’m sure others will agree.”

“Thanks for the compliment, but can we keep this strictly business?”

“If that’s what you want.”

I grab my purse, and I follow him down the hall to the elevator. It’s annoying to me that I have to keep telling him to stop making comments. Surprisingly, it’s just us two in the elevator and I’m waiting for him to say something. This is another place we’ve had sex. Not this building, the one when we used to live together.

Late one night, we had come home from a party. We were both a little tipsy and very horny. He slipped his hand up my dress and it was on from there. Lucky there were no cameras in the car because security would have got an eyeful. I blush at the thought and look over to see JC staring at me.

He nods, and I know he has figured out what I was thinking. This makes my face heat even more and he smiles. I avoid his eyes until the doors open on the main floor.

“I know what you were thinking.”

“Do you?”

“Would you ever be able to ride in an elevator without thinking of it?”

“Contrary to what you believe, I can ride an elevator without my mind drifting to dirty thoughts.”

“I’m glad you can because I find it incredibly hard, especially when the woman I did it with is right next to me.”

“JC, I thought you weren’t going to do this anymore. I can’t stress enough that it’s not going to happen between us. I love Noah.”

“Are you sure? You seem to have some doubts.”

“I’m sure. Nothing he tells me is going to end our relationship.”

My cell rings as he hails a cab. It’s Noah, and I know that JC is trying hard not to listen but it’s impossible in such a confined space. My face turns grim as Noah tells me that he needs leave this afternoon. I start chewing on the corner of my lip as I hang up. There’s JC’s thumb again to dislodge it.

“Noah has to leave early?”

“He said the client changed reservations. I won’t see him until Saturday evening. I guess I’m in for a few days of little sleep.”

“My offer still stands.”

“I’m sure it does.”

We make small talk about the office during the trip. I’m trying to avoid any personal conversation. Maybe I’m overreacting but my emotions are all jumbled. I’m hurt Noah is leaving. I thought we could discuss what happened the night before.

“Give him a chance, Lexi. I’m sure it’s nothing.”

As time goes by, I’m not sure that’s true. Noah’s never acted this way. The conversation is kept light between us. I think JC finally realizes I’m never going to be available to him again. I wish it were different but we’re both involved with other people.
