“And you’d be right. We haven’t had sex in a few weeks, but she has been away.”

“But you were together this weekend.”

“We had guests in the house. Not a very opportune time to have sex.”

I don’t want to mention that Noah and I had sex in JC’s house.

“What about when she’s home?”

“I’m not sure if Brianna likes sex or doesn’t like sex with me. I’ve tried everything. I wouldn’t be surprised if on her little excursions, she fucked other guys. I mean she’s twenty-three, what woman that age doesn’t want sex? Maybe I’m wrong.”

And maybe you’re comparing your wife to me when I was twenty-three. We had a lot of sex when we were together, sometimes rushing through the door from work, tearing off each other’s clothes, and falling into bed.

“JC, you shouldn’t speculate, especially about something so serious.”

“What am I to think? It’s almost like she’s repulsed by me. But we’re getting off task. We were talking about Noah.”

“There’s nothing to talk about. He’s going away; I’ll be alone and wondering what secret he has until he gets back.”

“Do you think it’s bad?”

“I don’t know. It could be anything. I don’t stick my nose into Noah’s business. He hasn’t given me any reason to.”

I check my watch and notice we’ve been talking about our shitty private lives for almost a half-hour. I have work to do and I let JC know that I need to get to work. As soon as he leaves the office, Nikki comes in to discuss our schedule for the week.

“Shit! Camden was just here. I need to ask why Vincent and Marco aren’t joining us for lunch.”

“Mr. Lawson requested I make that change. He didn’t say why.”

“Where did he ask you to make the reservation?”

“French’s. He said you are familiar with their food.”

Yeah, I’m familiar with more than their food. I’m familiar with JC’s habit of getting me off in our booth when we were together. No doubt, he will request our seating in the back of the restaurant.

“I am, but I’m not in the mood. Can you change it to Marino’s?”

“Sure, I’ll call and cancel the reservation.”

We discuss a few detail items before she leaves. I go to JC’s office. His door is closed, and I can hear him loudly talking, the hostility in his voice is apparent. Instead of waiting, I go back to my office and wait before I buzz his phone.

“Yes?”

He definitely is perturbed. I wish I hadn’t asked Nikki to change the reservation.

“JC, why French’s and why aren’t we having lunch with Vincent and Marco?”

“You know why French’s. Neither partner can make lunch. They have a client meeting downtown.”

“Excuse me if I don’t want to be reminded of the past.”

“You love French’s. Are you embarrassed?”

“Of what?”

“The things we did in that restaurant.”

“Sex doesn’t bother me. The fact that we’re no longer together and you need to constantly remind me of what we did there, does.”
