“Camden has told me lots about you, Lexi.”

“I hope it’s all good,” I say with a smile.

“Why wouldn’t it be? He told me you’re a wonderful addition to the company and making his life easier.”

I look at my former fiancé. “I appreciate that, JC.”

He shoots me a warning glance, and I realize he wasn’t kidding; he really didn’t tell Brianna about us. I better knock off calling him JC. She doesn’t notice because she didn’t mention it.

I smile because Brianna is wearing a pink string bikini much more revealing than the one I have on under my clothes. Her large breasts are barely covered by the cloth and spill out on the sides. I hope she doesn’t plan on playing volleyball because I don’t think the strings will hold.

Brianna offers us a mimosa, but I decline. It’s barely eleven in the morning, and I don’t want to get started too early. However, she indulges and fills her champagne flute practically to the rim, then saunters out to the pool area.

“This is quite a place you have here,” I said.

“Yeah, fourteen rooms, six of them are bedrooms, but it’s not mine, it’s Brianna’s parents. They’re in Japan right now or they would be here. Hunter is coming with his girlfriend; at least I think it’s his girlfriend.”

“Anyone else staying?”

“One of Brianna’s friends. She’s coming later. Let me show you where you’ll be sleeping. I hope you don’t mind that we share a terrace.”

“Why would I mind?”

Noah grabs my hand as we head up the stairs, and I feel a bit of tension in how tight he’s holding it. I stroke the back of his with my thumb and he opens his grip a little.

The room JC takes us to is enormous. The ceilings are at least fifteen feet high, and it’s about a third of the size of our loft. It’s painted a soothing cream color and a thick area rug the shade of almond is below our feet. He shows us the en suite which makes me happy we don’t have to share a bathroom. Then JC opens the double French doors to the terrace which overlooks the rectangular pool. Down below us is Brianna who is sitting on a lounge chair, drinking her mimosa and talking on her cell phone.

“Hey babe, do you want to decide what you’re wearing to the party?” JC calls.

Brianna looks up. “This is it. I’m not wearing white. It makes me look washed out.”

She flips her blonde hair and continues to talk on the phone. I can see the exasperation in JC’s face.

“I’m sorry. She isn’t a very good hostess.”

“JC, it’s fine. Noah and I are very self-sufficient. Besides, we’re leaving in a little while anyway, right?”

“Yes, but still.”

We hear the doorbell ring, and JC excuses himself to answer it, leaving us alone in the bedroom.

“Isn’t this some place? I can’t believe the size of the bathroom. I thought our bathroom was big.” I say.

“He doesn’t have it easy with her, does he?”

“Noah, I try to stay out of his business. JC hasn’t told me anything about their relationship.”

I hate lying to Noah, but the truth would make him uneasy, especially with the history between JC and me. We unpack a few things and put our toiletries on the light granite vanity the bathroom before heading back downstairs.

“Shit, Lexi, is that you?”

I turn to see JC’s brother smiling at me. “Hunter, so nice to see you.”

He scoops me up in a big hug. I always loved Hunter. He’s almost the spitting image of his brother, all thick brown hair, and cleft chin minus the stubble. The only difference is that Hunter has brown eyes, whereas JC has blue. I kiss his cheek and cling to him. Hunter was always my voice of reason when I had problems with JC. He comforted me when we broke up and we almost landed in bed together.

I introduce him to Noah. “This is my fiancé, Noah Wilton.”

They shake hands and begin to chat. Hunter mentions fishing, and that’s it, Noah is hooked, so to speak. It’s one of his favorite activities but he seldom gets to do it. JC gestures me over to the kitchen, leaving them in the living room and probably unaware that we’ve left.
