“Please don’t say anything to Brianna about us dating.”

“JC, we did more than date. You were to be my husband.”

“Yeah, but it didn’t work out, so please don’t.”

“I wish you wouldn’t involve me in your baggage. You should’ve told her when you knew I was working for you.”

“She was away. I wasn’t telling her over the phone.”

“Bullshit. You knew before she left, and you could’ve told her yesterday when she came home. Suppose Hunter says something? Is he supposed to pretend he doesn’t know me?”

“She knows we went to high school together, so why wouldn’t he know you?”

“I swear JC; I don’t want to get dragged into your marital drama.”

We stop talking as Brianna comes in for a refill of her mimosa. JC asks her not to drink so much and she narrows her eyes at him. Wow, I almost feel sorry for him, but he deserves it. While he’s arguing with her, I join Noah and Hunter. I don’t care that their conversation has moved on to investments of which I know nothing about. I want to escape the awkwardness in the kitchen.

“That’s quite a rock you have on your finger, Lexi. When’s the wedding?” Hunter asks.

“October. We still have some planning to do.”

“Where are you getting married?”

“The Paramount.”

“That old theater in Soho?”

“Yes, we wanted something different. The façade is period, but you have to see what they’ve done to the inside, just beautiful.”

“I wish you all the best.”

“Thank you.”

Noah excuses himself to get a drink of water, and Hunter leans in close to me.

“I’ll never forgive my brother for leaving you. He’s a fool.”

“It was a blessing in disguise. We could be like his marriage is now.”

“I doubt that. In some ways, I think he still loves you.”

I smile because I know Hunter’s right, but I’m in love with Noah. JC comes in to mention it’s 12:30 and we should get ready to leave especially if we want one of the loungers set up on the private beach. Vincent has a huge crowd and a lot of people head out to the sand.

I make sure I have everything I need to take to Vincent’s, especially my sarong. I don’t want Noah upset with me because I forgot it. JC suggests we take one car, but Noah prefers to drive his own. We decide to follow them.

“Lexi, what’s up with JC and his wife?”

“I told you, I don’t stick my nose into his business. She wants to drink; he doesn’t want her to drink. That’s what I got from it.”

“You’re getting defensive. I’m only asking a question.”

“I don’t want to argue. I want to enjoy this day.”

“Fine. I hope you don’t mind if I have a beer or two.”

“It’s okay. I can drive home tonight if I need to.”

I know I probably won’t have to worry. Noah rarely overindulges in alcohol and normally has a single beer or a glass of wine.
