We have the best damn shower of my life. I’ve never gotten oral sex in a shower before, but Ryan proves that he’s just as uninhibited in the light of day as he is under the light of the stars. He makes me come twice before I return the favor. By the time we emerge from the shower, the entire bathroom is covered in a thin mist of steam.

“I’m going to get dressed,” he says. He presses a kiss to my cheek. “Then I’ve got a few calls to make.”

“Do you have some sweats I can borrow?” I ask. I know perfectly well that he doesn’t have a spare change of clothes for me, but I can’t bring myself to wear yesterday’s outfit.

“On the bed,” he says. “I had my housekeeper bring in a change of clothes.”

“What?”

He shrugs like this is no big deal, but it kind of is. He sent someone to shop for me. Not only did he have someone shop for me, but he purchased me yet another outfit. I should feel totally embarrassed about this, and I kind of am, but mostly, I’m in awe.

Is this what having money is like?

“You’re staring,” he says.

“I’m just...I’m not used to this,” I say. The words come tumbling out. I don’t really want him to know I’m poor, but obviously, he already knows. “I’m not used to being around that much money,” I clarify.

He steps closer. “Does this bother you?”

“A little.”

“Why?”

“Because it seems unnecessary,” I say.

“Unnecessary?” Ryan asks.

“Yes.”

“Do you think it’s unneeded or do you think you aren’t worth it?”

“Both. I grew up not having money, Ryan. Everything was tight. Always. My mom...” I pause. I never talk about her. “My mom was a wreck after my dad left. He was the one who handled the money. After he passed away, she didn’t know what to do.”

“That sounds hard.”

“It was impossible,” I correct. “Impossible, but necessary. She had to figure out how to manage things. When she couldn’t, she let my stepdad take over.”

“Let me guess,” Ryan says.

“No matter what your guess is, it’ll be right. The dude is a piece of shit.”

“You still keep in touch?”

“Fuck no.”

“Good girl.” Ryan strokes my cheek softly. “Life is too short to bother with assholes, love.”

“Love?”

“Does the word bother you?”

“Not as much as the money stuff,” I admit.

“It’s just money.”

“You can say that because you have it,” I remind him. “You can say that you don’t like thinking about money because you are swimming in it.”

“True,” he agrees. “That’s fair.”
