Chapter 10 - Lacie

Vee and I left well after midnight. We both wanted to stay, but we all had an early morning the following day and we had lots to prepare. Maddox kissed me slowly before I left, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. His dark eyes were shining in the night, and something in my chest fluttered.

“See you tomorrow,” he said. I smiled, and went with Vee back to her car. We drove in silence for a while, until I took a deep breath and finally looked at her.

“Well, that was… unexpected.”

A grin spread over her face and she glanced over at me, her hands tightening on the steering wheel. “Yeah.”

“Should we tell Morgan?”

“Probably not right away. This job is super important to her, and she might panic that we’re messing it up for her.”

“True,” I said, leaning my head back against the seat. “Is her boss really trying to sabotage her?”

“I think so. He’s had it out for her for a while. The Mondays have been on a six-month bender, by all accounts. He’s probably trying to set her up to fail.”

“They seemed pretty normal to me. Not like crazy rock stars or anything.”

Veronica snorted. “Normal is one word for it. Fucking sexy as hell is another.”

“That’s four words,” I laughed.

“You know what I mean.”

“Are we assholes? For doing this when so much is riding on this job for Morgan?”

Veronica sighed, pursing her lips. Finally, she shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe. It just kind of… happened.”

“Yeah,” I replied.

We rode in silence all the way to my place. When she pulled up outside my place, Veronica looked at me curiously.

“So, did you…?”

“Did I what?” I asked, my cheeks getting redder.

“You know… Did you have sex?”

I chewed my lip and shrugged. Suddenly I was tongue tied. “I mean… not technically?” I turned slowly, glancing at my friend. A smile tugged at her lips and then she burst out laughing. I wasn’t far behind. Soon the two of us were in tears, leaning on each other as we laughed.

“What are we doing with our lives?” Veronica giggled.

“Living them,” I said. “I’ll see you in a few hours at the show.”

“See ya,” she said, and I slipped out of the car. I floated up to my house and collapsed in bed, a smile still playing on my lips. My mom was already asleep in the other room and I sighed deeply. Just for tonight, I didn’t want to think about it. It was too hard.

I could still feel Maddox’s hands on my body, and I could feel the electricity coursing through my veins when I thought of his body near mine. It had been like a fairy tale to be at his house. I squeezed my eyes shut, not wanting to think about my own old house and my sick mother in the next room. I just wanted to dream of the hot tub, the beautiful garden, the view of the city, and Maddox’s arms wrapped around my body.

I fell asleep dreaming of him.

When I woke up a couple hours later, I jumped out of bed with a smile on my face. I needed to be at the studio early to get the band ready for The Morning Show. Morgan had warned us that this would be a really important show to get the band back in the public eye, this time in a good way.

Vee picked me up right on time, handing me a coffee and grinning. We were at the studio by 6:30am. There was a gleam in her eye, but neither of us spoke much. I made my way to the band’s dressing room and got my hair and makeup supplies ready. Veronica disappeared, since she wouldn’t be needed until they got there. She would be documenting behind-the-scenes footage until we did the full photo shoot later.

I was just laying out the last of my things near the vanity when the door opened. I knew it was him before I saw him. It was like Maddox had an aura, or an energy that hit me right in the middle of the chest. I turned slowly, gripping the counter behind me with my hands.

He looked me up and down, letting a low growl escape his lips.
