Thank you, Dimitri. He had taught me that handy trick a few years back, when we were refining my hand-to-hand combat.

I grabbed Rodrigo’s gun and placed it in my waistband. When I turned to my left, I saw a startled nurse who held what looked to be my breakfast in her hands.

Her eyes were wide and her mouth hung open in shock.

“Sorry about that, but time is of the essence here.” I took my phone out of my pocket and read the address again. I knew exactly where it was, and if my estimate was correct, I would only just make it in time.

I headed straight for the fire escape, knowing damn well that my husband likely had men all over this damn building and I didn’t have time to fight them all off.

I took the steps at lightning speed, my heart straining against my ribcage as I increased my pace with each step.

The only thing on my mind was my mother and the blade that I was going to lodge in the middle of Felipe’s chest.

I took the nearest taxi to the location, and as I drew closer and closer to it, my hands heated.

One of us was dying today, and it wasn’t going to be me.

We came to a stop at a townhouse that looked to be on an abandoned street. I got out of the taxi and made my way into the house, very aware that I was walking into a trap.

The door was left slightly ajar—he was expecting me. He knew I would come.

As soon as I crept inside, I smelt the scent of rotting wood and musk. The furniture in the foyer was covered in white cloths, and the marble floors were covered in dust. Whoever lived here had long abandoned this place.

I drew my weapon and readied myself for what was to come. My eyes surveyed the area for any sight of Felipe. It was then I noticed the light in a room down the hallway.

He was there.

I creeped down the hallway, pressing my back against the wall as I moved. The gun was hot in my hand, the blade grazing my skin with each step.

I was ready.

As soon as I got to the door, I didn’t waste any time. I kicked the door open and stepped into the room.

Felipe sat behind a large desk in the center of the room, his legs kicked up on the aged wood. His eyes locked in with mine, and that signature smile of his found its way to his lips.

“Savina, my dear. I’ve been waiting for you.” His tone was light and airy. He dropped his legs from the desk and swiveled so he looked directly at me.

“Where is my mother, you asshole.” I pointed my gun right at his head.

He stood from the chair behind his desk and smiled at me. “Please, sit. I think you have some questions for me.”

I clicked the gun, reading my bullet. “Where is my mother? I won’t ask you again.”

He stared at me with those eyes that resembled ones that I had grown to care for. But instead of seeing warmth and comfort in them, I was met with darkness and poison. All the things that made up the man that was Felipe Valdez.

“She’s not here.” He shook his head with a sadistic smile on his face, “it’s incredible what AI can accomplish these days. Now, if you don’t mind, sit.”

“What?”

“Are you deaf? I told you that she isn’t here. Now sit down. We have much to discuss.”

An unholy amount of anger pooled into my system. My entire body went rigid, and all I could think about was the fact that this man had yet again fooled me.

“Oh, come now, Savina. Did you really think it was her? If only you had taken a closer look, you would have seen that it was fake.” He placed his hands on the table and leaned in my direction. The black in his eyes dilated. “I always have been one step ahead. Like right… now.”

I didn't even have time to think. One second, he stood there without a weapon in sight. And the next thing I knew a dagger was flying at me. I turned and narrowly missed getting hit. Unfortunately for me, Felipe was quick with his second draw because he managed to land a hit right in my shoulder, causing me to drop the gun.

I dropped to my knees in agony and went to pull out, but Felipe was in front of me in seconds. He took his fist and rammed it hard into the side of my head, disorientating me.
