There was a video attached, and when I clicked on it, all the blood turned to ice in my veins.

Sitting in a chair, bound and gagged, was my mother. She had tears streaming down her face, and there was a large gash on the side of her head oozing blood.

A second message followed after the video.

Felipe Valdez: Meet me here: 2453 Cornerstone Manhattan

Death was too kind of a punishment for this man. He had taken everything from me. Everything. And now I was going to take everything away from him in return.

The bloodlust flooded my mind. It was the only thing my mind could process. Rationality was out the window; I only spoke the language of violence.

But you promised him…

I pushed my inner consciousness away. The last thing that I needed from it right now was to guilt-trip me. I had made Andres a promise, but I had made a vow nine years ago to kill the man who had killed my family.

I would not back away from that vow.

I walked over to the bag Dimitri had brought. I changed out of my gown and put on the sweats and trainers that he had brought.

Thankfully, he had also placed my father’s blade and my brother’s ring that hung on the necklace I had purchased.

Revenge is coming for you, Felipe. Vengeance is on my side today.

I would carry them with me today. They would take part in the killing of Felipe, and they would finally find rest knowing their deaths had been avenged.

I placed the knife in my pocket and the necklace over my head. And just like that, the three of us were ready.

I gave myself the once-over in the mirror and steeled my heart. There was no room for emotion today. I needed to make my heart cold and lock away any hesitations that could distract me from the task at hand.

Andres’ face flashed in my mind for a brief moment before I shut the door shut. I refused for him to influence my actions today. I was a Baratelli by blood, and that is who I would be today.

“Blood for blood.” I said to my reflection. “No mercy. No prisoners.”

I walked out of the room and met a pair of stern caramel eyes from across the hallway. I forgot that my husband had me under his surveillance. This would need to be dealt with quickly if I wanted to make it to Felipe in time. The man was unhinged, and heavens knew what he would do to my mother if I was so much as a minute late.

“I’m guessing you’re Rodrigo?” Rodrigo stood tall, but he was still shorter than Andres.

He gave me a curt nod.

“Morning, Mrs Valdez,” he greeted. “Do you need anything?”

“No.”

His eyes looked me up and down. “Why are you not in your gown, then? Going for a walk?”

I could lie myself out of this, but I had no time for this right now. My mother’s life was at stake, and Rodrigo looked smarter than most. He would never fall for a pretty lie.

So, I guessed there was only one thing to do.

“Sorry about this, Rodrigo. It’s nothing personal.” I lunged for him. He dodged my attack easily and grabbed my right wrist, locking me in place. But that was exactly what I was counting on.

I turned so my back was flush against his front and then I used all my strength to lean forward and flip him over. Due to his initial shock, his grip on my wrist loosened and I was able to grab onto his.

He fell to the ground and I used my momentum to twist his arm behind his back and then force him into an immovable position.

“Shit!”

He tried to lift his head and then I took the chance and punched him in the jaw to disorientate him. While he was a little confused, I pressed down on the pressure point behind his neck and then he was out cold.
