“Valerio, get the gas.” I kept my hand around his neck, feeling the strongest urge to twist and snap his spine. “I’m feeling a little cold, and a fire will warm me up nicely.”

My brother did as I asked of him. He handed me the gas can and I took the liberty of dousing him in it. By the time I was done, he was soaked and the poisonous anger in me had spread to every organ in my body.

‘You cannot save her…’

His words rang loud and true in my head like a resounding gong.

“The snake is already in your garden, Valdez.” Boris lifted his head and smiled at me, the look in his eyes could only be described as that of a cold-blooded serpent. “And it’s coming for your wife.”

I dug my lighter from my pocket and clicked the flame to life. I stared at who was once considered the greatest soldier in all the families. The saying was true, the higher you stood the harder you would fall.

“Burn in hell, Boris.”

“I’ll be waiting for you there, Andres.”

I threw the lighter, and within seconds he was ablaze. His screams vibrated off of the walls, shaking the concrete as death scorched his skin. I watched him burn, but my mind remained on his words.

‘The snake is already in your garden…’

Had my initial assumption been correct? Was Dimitri behind what had happened to the Baratelli men?

It was imperative from this moment on that I moved with extreme caution. If I was up against Dimitri, it also meant that she was in far greater danger than I realized.

Chapter Sixteen

Savina’s POV

It had been three days since I had uprooted my life and moved to Manhattan as per my husband's request—or more, demand. I hated the Manhattan borough. There were so many memories there that I would far rather forget.

Tonight, he had dragged me out of the comfort of my warm bed to attend his father’s birthday. I didn’t know gremlins like Felipe celebrated birthdays, and yet here we were. I was about as excited to be here as one was to attend a lobotomy. We had driven all the way upstate to the Valdez estate, which was ironically not too far from mine. Felipe had transformed their ballroom into a cheesy James Bond themed venue. People milled around in gowns and tuxedos, playing the part of happy guests when, deep down, we all knew we wanted to kill each other.

I turned to my husband who stood beside me, people watching with me as well. He had said all of two words to me tonight, and in the three days we had relocated to Manhattan he had barely said three sentences to me. Something was up his ass and it was annoying me.

“Care for a dance?” I broke the silence between us. I was tired of him just wallowing in his head, leaving me to brave this damned birthday party alone.

Andres gave a curt nod, not even bothering to look my way. He took my hand in his and ushered us to the dance floor.

He drew me into his arms and moved us along the dance floor. I could feel the tension riddled in his muscles. His spine was rigid and his grip on me was far too tight to remain comfortable.

“Are you trying to mark me with your fingers again, Valdez?” I asked as he moved us effortlessly against the floor.

He snapped his eyes to meet mine for the first time tonight. He was troubled, but he refused to talk to me. Not that I expected him to.

“Oh.” He loosened his grip. His eyes took in my body for the first time and I saw the momentary hunger that flashed across his eyes. But just as quickly as it came it faded away.

“What is up your ass? You’re acting kind of weird. You should be overjoyed about the fact that you caught Danny’s killer, but you’ve been walking around here like someone shoved a pole up your ass.”

“You seem quite fascinated with my ass, bruja.”

He was annoying to be around when he was in a good mood, but right now he was borderline insufferable.

“I thought you preferred me to be silent, wife.”

I cut my sharp eyes over his shoulder and saw his brother and father off in the corner. “I prefer not to have a docile husband. It’s unbecoming of you, and quite frankly unsettling.”

He snorted. “Pick a side, bruja. Do you want me silent or do you want me fighting you at every turn?”

“I prefer you fucking me from behind if I’m quite honest with you.”
