“She’s wearing all black. She has diamond earrings and a friendly smile.” He says matter-of-factly.

“Where? Where?” Tabitha asks.

As the evening progressed,my gaze continued to wander around the room. My gaze lingered on her as she worked tirelessly around the room. She had me completely enthralled.

Our eyes met finally as she stood in front of our group with a tray of drinks and Monty elbows me.

A moment of undeniable connection sent a jolt of electricity coursing through my body. Her presence casts a spell over me that I cannot ignore.

“Can I ask you a question?” Monty says to her.

She gives him her full attention and part of me wants to push him out of the way, while the other part of me is curious about what he’s going to ask her.

“Sure,” she replies, her voice soft like honey.

“What does working at an event like this cost?”

I elbow him and step beside him. “Ignore my friend. He doesn’t get out much and doesn’t know how to act in public. You don’t need to answer that. In fact, please don’t.” I offer her a smile, which she returns.

“It’s no big deal. Let’s just say that taking jobs like this makes your day job seem pointless. Have a great rest of your night, folks.” She turns on her heel and walks away.

As the night wears on, dinner is served, and I lose sight of the beautiful woman while I sit and talk with my friends at my table. After dinner and coffee, the real purpose of the charity occurs, the auction and dedication.

My friends and I sit quietly as tables surrounding us hold up their paddles, signalling their desire to bid during the auction. I excuse myself from the table and head out of the ballroom in search of the restroom. Once I’m finished, I bump into a woman.

It’s her.

I steady her with my hands while her hands fly to my chest.

“Oh crap, I’m so sorry about that, sir.”

“Hey, it’s all good,” I reassure her. “My name is Miller.”

“Hi, Miller. You have a last name for a first name?” she tilts her head in question.

“Yeah, I guess I do. But in retrospect, my parents named me. I had nothing to do with it.”

“You have a point there. I’ve got to get back to work. I’m sorry for bumping into you.” She steps away, pushing a loose hair behind her ear.

“I’m glad we did.”
