CHAPTER 2

Denise

My feet are killing me.

Last night was a lot of fun, and damn well worth the soreness that I’m feeling today.

It was fun working at a big event like a fancy charity ball, full of gorgeous dresses and powerful people.

And what’s even better is that the pay was off the charts. Easily, what I make in a month working here at Sally’s Danger Diner.

The kitchen rang the bell, signaling an order was up. I turn away from the counter and grab the plates, walk them over to the table, and set them in front of the couple sitting in the booth.

“Is there anything else that I can get you?” I ask expectantly, looking between them.

“Can we each get a side salad? Ranch for his and thousand island for me?”

“I will put that in for the kitchen and be right back with it.”

The door opens as I’m walking past. “Take any booth, whatever’s open. I’ll be with you in a moment.”

I put the order into the kitchen, grabbed my order pad, and walked over to the corner booth, where three people grabbed a seat.

I grab some menus by the front register and begin handing them out.

“Hi guys, my name is Denise. I’ll be your server today.” I look at the faces of the people sitting in my booth. It’s three guys from the charity function from last night. One of them was the hot charming guy that I bumped into in the hallway and could have sworn that I had a genuine moment with.

“You look familiar.” The guy said, placing his finger on his mouth.

“She was at the event last night.” The hot one said, his voice low, his eyes never leaving mine.

“Oh, you were there last night? That’s great. What are you doing here? Are you, um, pretending to work at a diner? Are you undercover to get the juice on my boy here?” the other guy asks.

“Mont, knock it off.” The guy across from him says.

“Forgive me, but my companion was raised in the wild by wolves.” We don’t let him out of the house too much and he forgets his manners. Ignore him.” The hot guy, Miller says., “Hi Denise, it’s nice to see you again and officially meet you.”

“Miller, right?” I point my pen at him.

“You remembered.” He jokingly says, pressing his hand against his chest.

“How can I forget a man with a last name for a first name.” I smile. “I’ll give you guys a few minutes to figure out what you want to order.” I step away, my heart beating quickly at the nearness of being around Miller.

I had the same feeling as last night when we ran into each other in the hallway. I was irresistibly drawn to him.

Last night at the charity, I noticed him as soon as he and his friends walked into the large ballroom. I noticed him when his eyes would find me across the space, in a room of hundreds. And I sure as hell noticed him when our bodies collided, and his strong hands held me up.

I didn’t know who he really was, but I knew to have been in that room last night as an attendee. He had to be somebody.

I take a sip of my water sitting on the counter, steady myself to approach their table again, and steel myself.

“So, guys, have you decided what you wanted to eat?” I ask.

They place their order and I put it into the kitchen as another group of people come in. I give that table their menus, then check in on my other table. The diner picks up and I’m running around like crazy as I’m the only server working for the next hour. I place checks on each table and move on to the next, then head over to the register.

I look up and it’s Miller with a devilishly handsome smile.

“Hi.”
