Twenty-Three

Shaw

Marie is standingoutside my door, but Mason is nowhere to be seen and it’s not a drop off day or a planned meeting that I was aware of.

“What’s up?” I ask, standing defensively in the doorway.

“We need to talk,” she states, her tone dismissive.

Not wanting to be a complete asshole, I open the door and allow her to walk in. She walks through my house slowly, looking around, as if she’s never been here before. She’s come in a few times when Mason was asleep and she would drop him off. But she’s never had any lingering visits and there’s been no need for more than a driveway conversation.

I motion to the dinner table and sit across from her with my arms folded over my chest.

“So, what is it?” I ask.

“Did you cheat on me with her?” She asks point blank.

My blood turns to ice and my fists clench, thankfully covered by my arms.

“What?” I ask sternly.

“Summer and you. Did you cheat on me with her?” she repeats.

“I think that you have no ground to stand on here, Marie. You were having a relationship with that guy. My friendship with Summer played no role in what broke us up.”

“You still aren’t answering my question.”

“It doesn’t need to be answered because there’s no point. Our relationship has been over and done with now for a while. My current relationship status is none of your business.”

“How long?” She asks.

“How long what?”

“How long have you been fucking around with Summer?”

“Again, my current relationship status is none of your fucking business. If we aren’t talking about Mason, then we do not need to be talking,” I stand up and lay both my hands on the table.

“Mason is involved in all of your decisions,” she spits back at me.

“You should have thought about that before you cheated on me with Connor. But you weren’t, were you?” I seethe.

“Marie, I think you need to leave my house.”

“Or what, your little girlfriend is going to come after me?” She sing-songs.

“No, she doesn’t need to stoop down to your level. Please get up and leave my house, your accusations are not welcome in my home.”

“Accusations? Please. I never trusted you and her together. There was something always strange with your friendship.” She shakes her head with a sour look on her face.

“Our friendship was just that, just friends.”

“It didn’t look that way at the hospital and Mason said that when he was over here that she was sleeping in your bed. I don’t want my son exposed to that shit.”

“You have no right to dictate who I am with. You hold no capacity of any control in my life. Not now, and not ever. Now, I would like you to leave.” I point towards the door.

“You’re such a fucking liar, Shaw.” she stands and moves around the table towards the front door, opens it and steps on the porch.

From the doorway, I say the last words, “I believe the fucking liar would be you, Marie.”
