My hand rested on his shoulder, my thumb lightly moving along his soft skin.

Shaw holds up the remote, mutes the cartoon, and turns his body to us.

“Hey buddy, can we talk to you for a minute?” Shaw starts.

Oh crap, okay, we’re doing this now. My heart feels like it’s going to beat out of my chest. I hope that Mason doesn’t notice it.

“What’s up, Daddy?” Mason’s tiny voice asks.

“So, you know that Auntie Summer and I have known one another for a really long time, right?” Shaw asks as Mason looks up at me, still cuddled into me.

“Yeah, you guys are like brother and sister, but you kiss!” Mason exclaims.

“Well, not really. You see, we’re really close, really good friends. And sometimes, friends get closer.”

“Okay,” Mason says nonchalantly.

“So, I really like Summer. And Summer really likes me,” he clears his throat and I see the nervousness in his expression.

I move my arm around Mason and turn him to face me.

“Daddy and I like each other the same way that your mommy and her boyfriend like each other.” I say simply, hoping that he understands.

“Are you guys going to get married?” Mason looks between Shaw and me.

“We don’t know buddy, but we’ll see where it leads,” I say.

“Okay,” Mason says.

“Okay?” Shaw repeats.

“Yeah. I love Auntie Summer and I love you too, Daddy. It makes sense. It’s like caramel and apples. They just go together. Besides, I know Auntie Summer has been sleeping in your room, I saw her that night,” Mason snuggles back into me. “Can we still watch Paw Patrol? I want to see if they can rescue Rubble before I have to go to sleep.”

Shaw’s mouth is open and I’m fighting off laughing.

I guess telling a kid these kinds of things shouldn’t be as nerve racking as I was making it up to be. It’s not like Mason doesn’t know me or like me.

We’re family.
