Twenty-Two

Summer

I wasn’t planningon announcing the relationship to his mom like this.

Hell. I didn’t really even think that was something done much anymore. I never met Colin’s parents, and relationships just sorta happen when you are an adult.

I shake my head and take in a deep breath.

“Well, you see, we really haven’t had the conversation about a relationship status or anything and my Facebook still says ‘single’, but we’re traversing through the waters,” I say leaning over the phone.

“She’s lying. We’re full blown dating. We even already live together.” Shaw says with a smirk.

“Only because I needed a place to stay!” I say to him through clenched teeth.

“So then, that’s the truth.” He pushes back.

“You’re so annoying sometimes,” I shake my head.

“Is this a new lover's spat? Kids, kids, can we get to the point of the call. You need a volunteer, Summer dear?”

“Sorry, yes. I have a missing staff member and can only spread myself so thin.”

“You know how much I love your store, how often do you need me, I will need to make sure it doesn’t interfere with any other obligations,”

“See, I told you she was busy!” I say to Shaw, who rolls his eyes. “Whenever you have the free time, really, you would be doing me a favor.”

Janet and I figure out a schedule for the next few days and I smile, feeling instantly lighter.

“Now, about the matter of you two dating…” she says changing the subject.

Mason isdue over to the house for the weekend tonight and I’m nervous about how Shaw and I will act around him. We discussed after speaking with his mom this morning how to go about presenting the news to Mason, but I was still strong on the belief that it should happen organically. But after more discussion on not wanting to keep secrets, we decided that why not spread the news more?

We’ve already come out to a few friends and Shaw’s mother, so it’s not a huge secret. We’ve passed the point of no return, as we’ve slept with one another, so even if the relationship was short lived, something has changed and it’s pretty apparent.

Unless Shaw has always looked at me like he wants to forgo dinner and eat me instead, I’m not sure if we will be able to curtail everything that happens between us.

Having a conversation with a four-year-old is easy, but all day while at the shop, my stomach was doing flips and I wasn’t sure which end was up.

“Hey boss, I know that Tasha hasn’t called in, so if you need me to work more hours, since it’s summer, I totally can,” Becky offers.

“Thanks Beck, I have a volunteer coming in, but I think I can rework some of the schedule to accommodate. If you want to write up your ideal schedule, I’ll see what I can do.” I say with a smile.

“You’re the best. I’ll make sure to have it here for you tomorrow. Anything that I need to know?” she asks.

I run down the day’s events and then give her the information for the weekly book club that comes in on Fridays and then leave to go home.

Go home.

Home is currently with the guy that I’m dating.

The guy who I’ve been just friends with for most of my adult life.

The guy who I’ve recently only opened my eyes to.

The guy who I’m falling fiercely in love with so quickly in a different capacity than I have previously.

Shaw cookedspaghetti and left me a warm plate to eat upon returning to the house. Shaw gave Mason his shower and then we settled on the couch to hang out and watch a show before Mason went to bed. He sat between us, snuggled into my side as he normally does when we’re on a couch together.
