The tensionin the room is high whenever Marie is in it. While she and I had a rocky relationship, that doesn’t negate the fact that we shared a great kid. Mason is awake and the doctor is giving him a skin test based off of the ingredients from the food that he ate, which lead to the hospital visit.

We haven’t noticed any other allergic reactions before, but the kid is also a picky eater, so his palate is quite bland.

There were reactions to about four different types of nuts, with hazelnuts and cashews being the worst reactions for the tests.

We are given epi-pens for both households and after ten hours at the hospital, Mason is released and everyone is exhausted.

Marie’s attitude didn’t lessen all day, especially once Mason was awake.

Summer and I hug Mason and we both told him that we loved him as we left. I am exhausted and so is she. Most of her night, she spent sitting in the waiting room and I felt horrible that she couldn’t be with me and Mason.

“I’m sorry that our date was cut short unexpectedly,” I say.

“I think there was a good reason, so it’s okay. How are you doing?” she asks.

“I’m tired and annoyed. I’m sorry for how Marie was, but I am really glad you were there.”

“I’m glad I was there too,” she says, rolling her head toward me.

“Did Marie say anything to you?” I ask after a beat.

“She said something like she always knew, but I’m not sure what that meant.”

“Always knew?” I look at her when I stop at the light.

“Yeah, she didn’t say anything else though, so I’m not sure it’s really that big of a deal.”

“Weird. She sure as shit didn’t like that the nurse called you Mrs. Renner. I kinda liked it,” I wink at her.

“Don’t get too ahead of yourself there buddy, I’m not sure if I really like you or not.”

“Oh, trust me. You like me. I can tell.”

“Oh yeah, and suddenly you know everything?”

“Men always know all the things.”

“Except directions, how to find things and how to make decisions.”

“Ouch.”

Despite the nightending in exhaustion, I still feel like the date before the hospital was going really well. When we returned to the house, I kissed her at her bedroom door and then went to my bedroom.

My body is exhausted, but my mind is running a mile a minute. A light tap on my door startles me and also excites me as I know who is on the other end of the door. I lean up on my elbows and tell her to come in.

Summer pokes her head in and smiles, “I can’t sleep,” she whispers.

I move from the center of my bed to allow space for her and pat the space beside me. She comes in and settles in beside me. My arm goes around her and she leans her cheek on my chest.

“Tonight was… interesting,” she says.

“Tell about it, I’m sorry again that our date got interrupted.”

“Stop apologizing for that. When there are other responsibilities in one’s life, sometimes those kinds of things take precedence. I love Mason, and I know that he means the world to you,” she says.
