“Marie, this is not the time or place for jealousy. Our son is in the hospital. What the fuck happened?” Shaw asks.

“He ate some nutrition bar and he had a reaction; they’ve shot him with an epi-pen and he’s resting now.”

“What kind of bar?” I ask as Marie cuts an annoyed gaze at me.

When Marie doesn’t acknowledge my question, Shaw pushes past her and we move to the front desk. Shaw leans in and asks for the room number, then he’s leading me through the hall to the room. We stand in the doorway and look in on Mason. His tiny frame in the large hospital bed, an IV beside his bed and he’s got a pinched expression on his face.

Shaw steps forward, and I pull my hand out of his grasp finally. Shaw stops and looks back confused.

“I’m right here, I’ll be here and won’t go anywhere,” I say quietly.

“I want you by my side,” he replies holding out his hand.

“Are you sure?” I ask.

“Summer, my little boy is laying in a hospital bed, I need you. I need my best friend.”

I can’t deny him that. I slip my hand back in his and we sit beside Mason’s bed. I’m leaning on Shaw’s shoulder when I hear Mason say something.

“Daddy?” His voice is groggy.

“Hey buddy,” Shaw and I immediately stand up.

“Auntie Summer,” Mason’s eyes dart to me and he smiles.

“Hey little guy, how you are doing?” I ask him.

“It hurt to breathe, and lumps were all over me,” Mason says quietly.

“How do you feel now?” Shaw asks.

“Sleepy,” Mason closes his eyes for a moment.

“I’ll go get Marie, she may want to see him,” I say.

“Ignore her rudeness, don’t let anything that she says to you affect you,” he says cupping my face and pulling me in for a quick kiss.

I smile, squeeze his hand and lean in to give Mason a quick kiss as he opens his eyes.

“Where are you going?” He asks.

“I’m going to go get your mommy, I’ll be back soon.”

I find my way out of the winding halls of the hospital and into the waiting room to Marie and her boyfriend sitting. Marie stands with an annoyed posture as I approach.

“Mason is awake, I came back out, so you can go in,” I say as politely as I can.

“How nice of you to let me go and see my son, Summer.” She says with obvious annoyance and then looks back at her boyfriend. “Are you coming?”

“No, only two people at a time. I’m fine. I’ll hang out, grab something for us to eat.” He stands and walks away.

Marie gives me a once over and rolls his eyes. “I always knew it,” she says and walks away.

Always knew what?
