Chapter Eleven

We’ve managedto keep our relationship private around the vicinity of work for two months. We remained the utmost of professionals while at the office, albeit a few quick make-outs in his office behind closed doors. But we’ve done well with keeping our expressions neutral around one another and keeping personal from business separate.

I stayed late last night, to be able to leave when he did, and catch some dinner at our favorite street taco liquor store, and now we’re both on our way to work. However, as we’re waiting for the train to arrive, both with coffee in our free hands, we’re taken aback when we run into Nicole. She looks down at our joined hands, then with a surprised expression, she looks at me, then at Quinn. We quickly drop hands and both of us begin stumbling for coherent words, except nothing is English as it comes out of our mouths at the same time.

She raises her hand to stop us and smiles.

“I know nothing. I saw nothing. This is just three people who happen to work at the same company on the same train,” she says.

Quinn’s open mouth closes, but mine keeps moving.

“Listen Nicole, nothing—” I begin.

“Is going on? Bullshit. You have been practically floating on cloud nine for a bit, everyone on the team has noticed, they just don’t know that it’s because of this guy.” She hooks her thumb in his direction. “It makes sense now though. I won’t tell anyone, you can trust me with that. But maybe don’t show up to work at the same time,” she says.

“Uh, thank you.” Quinn says.

Nicole winks at him, “no problem. I better get moving. I don’t want to be late.”

She practically skips away, leaving both of us stunned in our place on the train platform.

“Did that really just happen?” I ask.

“Is she trustworthy?” Quinn asks.

“I think so, yeah. I mean, I don’t know her very well, but I don’t think that she would go blabbing to the entire office.”

“Maybe we just come out and slowly begin letting people know that we’re a couple.”

I turn to him. We haven’t put a real title to our relationship, but it’s not like as adults that’s a thing anyways.

“Are we boyfriend and girlfriend?” I ask.

“I feel like partner would be better suited, we’re not kids. I’m not a boy, but a man, and you are a woman, not a girl.”

“Okay, so we’re partners.”

“Partners.” He nods.

“I don’t know though, about outing us. Maybe we need to take a deep look at the company handbook, make sure that we’re not breaking any rules.”

“As the boss, I think I should speak with the board and the personnel committee to see about making some changes in it while I’m at it. I want to begin to incorporate mini skirt Thursdays.”

“Excuse me?”

“I want to see you in a mini skirt, call you into my office and purposely drop things on the ground for you to pick up.” He grins.

I shake my head. “You are incorrigible.”

“You love it.”

Walking into the office, I expected to have all eyes on me, but there were no hushed whispers, no one looking over their cubicle walls as I walk by and Shane was nowhere to be seen.

Olivia comes over to my desk for advice on some of her topics, Nicole comes by to borrow a pen, and Shane makes it over for his mid-day break to get some coffee. No one makes mention and I feel a little more relaxed in my confidence that Nicole hasn’t said anything. But that’s not to say I can fully trust that the secret is safe. Everyone has their price, and time will only tell if she has one eventually.

After work, I make my way home and have a quick dinner with Steph before she goes out on one of her Tinder dates. I turn on the television once she leaves and relax into the couch.

What if we slowly became a little more open with our relationship?

Would people think that I’m sleeping with the boss to get ahead, since the promotion was taken from me before he came along?

Would people be supportive?

Would I get fired?
