Chapter Seven

Over the next few days,I went to work, kept my head down and worked my ass off. I didn’t get up and walk around, take a lot of breaks or hang out in the office kitchen. I took lunch off-site and left at exactly four-thirty each day. My strict regimen paid off, because I only saw Quinn once and that was in a meeting.

However, now I’m sitting at the conference table waiting for the meeting he scheduled to begin. He comes in and sits beside me without a word, as he sets down his materials. His assistant sits behind him against the wall, with her notebook in her hand, ready to jot down notes. He smells like eucalyptus and his arm brushes against mine when he places it on the tabletop. He doesn’t move it, like he’s enjoying the contact.

“Hi,” he says once he’s settled.

“Hi,” I reply back playing with the spiral of my notebook nervously.

I wasn’t expecting him to sit beside me, let alone have this much of an effect on me by doing so.

“I haven’t seen you all week,” he notes quietly.

“I saw you the other day in the kitchen.” I point out.

“That was four days ago.”

“Yeah, well, busy bee, you know how it goes. Work, work, work.”

He looks at me strangely and then leans in towards me.

“Let’s do lunch today?”

“I’m sorry, I can’t.” I shake my head.

“And why not?” he asks.

“I have lunch plans,” I say. I’m not lying, I really do have lunch plans with Steph since she has an interview in the city today.

“So, break your plans.”

I look at him with shock, “I can’t do that.”

“Fine then, do dinner with me this evening?”

“Mr. Montgomery,” I say quietly in shock.

“Quinn.” He says looking me in the eyes.

“I think that we shouldn’t have dinner or any meals together.”

“And why is that?”

“You know, because you’re my boss and I’m your employee.” I point out the obvious.

“So?” he says.

“So, it’s not proper.”

“Well then, we can talk about work.”

The rest of the creative department files into the space halting the conversation or argument that we were having, and the meeting begins.

Quinn asks for the team’s input, and everyone runs ideas by him. At one point, he stops the conversation and asks his assistant to get on the whiteboard to write down all the ideas being thrown around. I give my input and sit back to let everyone have their share.

By the end of the meeting the two whiteboards on one side of the room are filled and Quinn has a large smile on his face. With the ideas from everyone on the content team, we came up with designs to last a year, and the staff appeared to be happy to be involved in the discussion. Two hours later, while exhausted, everyone left the meeting in high spirits. I walk out with the crowd and made my way to the where I agreed to meet Steph in no time.

I just sat down when my phone buzzed with a message.
