Unknown Number: When you get back to the office, we should talk.

I don’t need to respond New Phone, who this? to know that it’s Quinn texting me. But why?

Steph slides into her chair with a large smile on her face and I forget about my morning and Quinn.

“Did you get the job?” I ask.

“Not yet, but I feel really good about it. Like super expensive champagne good about it.”

“Should we order a bottle?” I ask with a devilish grin.

“Don’t you have to go back to the office?” she asks.

“I do, but I can easily get out of returning for the rest of the afternoon.”

“Ah yes, you have an in with Prince Charming.”

“Quit calling him that, he’s my boss.”

“Oh yeah, he wants you to call him by his name, what was it again?”

“Quinn. Now quit it. I don’t have an in with my boss.”

“I call bullshit on that.” She laughs.

“Enough about me, tell me about this job?”

We don’t order the champagne and I end up heading back to work. I don’t go to Quinn’s office and he doesn’t come in search of me or send his assistant either. I continue to keep my head down until it’s time to go and with everyone else, I’m out of the building in a flash.

I pop in my earbuds for the train ride and listen to the romance novel audiobook all the way to my stop, plus the short two block walk to my home.

I’m in my room changing when I hear Steph opening the door. She’s talking to the person and then calls my name.

“Be right out, I’m changing.” I return.

Steph is doing all the talking, so I don’t hear the other person, but once I walk into the living room, my feet become glued to the floor at the sight of Quinn Montgomery in my home.

He offers me a crooked smile with his hands stuffed into his front pockets.

“Look who I found walking on our street as I was coming home.” Steph smiles pointing to Quinn.

“Hey,” he says finally.

“Um, hello,” I stand awkwardly, unsure for how to respond.

“I’ll, uh, leave you two alone. Nice chatting with you, Quinn. Good to see you again as well.” She gives a wave with her fingers, winks at me as she heads towards her bedroom leaving us alone in the living room.

“What are you doing here?” I ask him as soon as her door closes.

“You never came to my office,” he replies simply.

“Oh, that was you?” I play dumb.

“Oh come on, you knew it was me. Who else has an office at work? I think mine is the only one.”

“Human resources and payroll have their own offices. I think there are a few more as well. How was I to know that it was you. It was an unknown number.” I shrug.

“So, did you go to the other offices?” he asks.
