I have examined the bedroom door lock, and if I had something to fashion into a lock pick, I’d be able to get out of here in no time as it’s just a traditional pin-tumbler lock! A guard comes in here a few times a day to bring me clean clothes, food, tea, and refreshments. He stands on watch as I eat and then goes through the utensils to ensure he takes each one with him, so I can’t even hide one of those.

He’s a strange man. There’s something about him that tells me he isn’t happy doing what he is, and when he’s around, I don’t feel intimidated by him but instead protected. The man treats me with nothing but respect even though it’s with a steely warning undertone. One that lets me know that he doesn’t want to hurt me, but he’d be forced to if I tried anything.

I look at the wristwatch my brother gave me when we left the compound two days ago. It has a strange engraving beneath it. To make sure I’m always with you. I think it might have a tracker in it, as it also has a weird button on it, which I’ve pressed numerous times, but nothing happened.

I hear the key turn in the lock and face the door as there is a slight knock.

“Mrs. Belov, I’m entering the room,” the guard says politely before pausing for a minute and then slowly opening the door—it’s become our ritual. “You need to come with me.”

“Where are we going?”

“You have an OB-GYN appointment,” he tells me.

“I don’t remember making one.”

“Please don’t be difficult, Mrs. Belov. I don’t want to have to use force to get you to comply with these instructions,” he warns.

“Where are my friends Stacy and Lev?” I ask him every time he comes in here, but he never answers. “If you tell me where they are and if they’re okay, I’ll go with you without making a scene.”

He sighs. “Miss Thompson and Mr. Belov are fine. Miss Thompson is in the room next to yours, and Mr. Belov is across the hall from her.”

“They’re not in the same room?”

“No.” The guard shakes his head. “Mr. Belov has just had his hip injury seen to, and his braces are being fixed.” He glances out the door and down the hallway. “Miss. Thompson has just finished with the OB-GYN, who is also a fertility expert.”

“Oh!” My eyes widen in surprise. “Why?”

“I don’t know,” the guard admits.

“Where are we?” I ask him.

“At a hunting lodge,” he replies. “Now can we go?”

“A hunting lodge where?”

“You ask a lot of questions,” he tells me

“Do you blame me?”

“I guess not,” he admits. “Now, please, can we go? If you give me problems they’ll replace me as your guard and trust me, you don’t want any of the others looking after you.”

“You call this looking after me?” I look at him in amazement. “I call it being my prison warden.”

I walk past and as I step into the hall, he whispers, “You’re in Grafton, Vermont.”

“Seriously?” I look at him wide-eyed. He nods and puts his finger to his lips, indicating that I shouldn’t say a word, and I nod. “What’s your name?”

“Stan.”

“Where is the OB-GYN?”

“Just past the living room and near the gym. There was a spa treatment room that has been turned into a temporary surgery,” Stan tells me.

“Why?”

He shrugs. “All I know is that it’s been used as a medical treatment base for the men.”

“Whose men are they?” My eyes take in the long hallway with rooms to the left and right.
