“All that because I said I can’t tolerate her?” I asked no one specifically, and the other guys laughed, nodding.

“She’s a sweetheart!” one of the guys said, and I scoffed.

“My ass.” I shook my head as I left the lunch room, wanting some alone time.

“Mr. Harris.” Her voice called out for me, and I shrieked as I distanced myself from her.

What the fuck is wrong with her?

“What?” I asked irritatedly, and she smiled, amused that she had scared me.

“Sorry,” she said sheepishly as she pushed her hands inside her coat. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“You didn’t.” I had to immediately shut down the idea that she had scared me. My heart wouldn’t stop hammering against my chest. Fuck, that was frightening.

“Okay.” She tried to stifle her giggling. If she weren’t so pesky, I might have found that cute. “Anyway.” She shook her head, and I watched her ponytail sway with the movement. Her hair had great volume. Pity she was average-looking; she had an attractive body, but that was all she had going for her.

Lies.

“Have you thought of my proposal? You need those sessions.” Her serious expression was proof enough that no matter what I said to get her to give up, she wouldn’t. Frowning, I sighed as I leaned against the wall. I didn’t want to do this, but I guessed this was the only way I could get her to stop.

Smirking, I crossed my arms over my chest and said huskily, “Do you really want to get me in a room with you that badly?” Trust me, I was just as embarrassed and grossed out. What is wrong with me?

Her unchanging expression shocked me. She didn’t find that vexing? “Yes, I do. We need to have some discussions.” She looked at her watch and pouted. “I am free right now. I know you guys are currently on break.”

WHY WON’T SHE GIVE UP?!

“No, I’m busy.” I pushed myself off the wall and pushed my hair back. All that sexyness was for nothing. I felt exploited. Am I not her type? Why does that matter? Focus!

“What are you busy with?” Her eyes twinkled as she looked at me. Okay, now that was much scarier than her waiting outside the lunch room for me.

“Personal stuff,” I said, once again distancing myself from her. She stood in her position, and I could see her satisfied smile making its way on her face again. She liked it when I gave up easily, and she was so confident about it, too!

“Do you think it can wait until after our consultation?” She tilted her head to the side. Oh God, she was reveling in my farness from her. I didn’t like that smirk on her face. I stepped closer to her. She didn’t move, but her eyes fluttered, proving her shock.

Now I was satisfied.

“No, I cannot, because it’s male issues.” I leaned in closer to her, and she widened her eyes, slowly moving her head back. “Do you have a problem with that?”

“Uhm, n-no. Not at all; we all have issues,” she spluttered as she regained her composure, not moving her head back anymore. “But Mr. Harris, you can’t keep avoiding these sessions. You need to begin attending them like the other players.”

“I’m not like the other players. I can handle my problems just fine,” I spat as I stood up straighter. “They aren’t men enough.” I shrugged, and her mouth opened in a small “o” as she watched me turn to walk away from her.

“Mr. Harris, being vulnerable and opening up about things that bother you doesn’t make you any less manly, as you say you are. As a matter of fact, belittling other men because they’re in touch with their feelings and are open about the things they feel makes you less courageous than they are.”

“You’re fucking annoying,” I growled, and she scoffed.

“No, I am concerned about you. It is my job to reach out to you.”

“A job that you got through nepotism,” I spat, and she shrugged, still smiling. She said she was concerned… But look at her expression. She was enjoying this back-and-forth with me.

“Even so, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do it. Will you please attend the sessions?”

She always had something to say; something smart to argue with me, and it got under my skin! Wouldn’t she ever shut up?

“I take it you’re thinking about it?” she whispered, and I stared at her silently.

First, she parked in my spot. Then she said she noticed a problem with me after watching me at practice, and now she’s saying I’m not courageous?
