“Thanks, Jay.” Her voice was soft and smooth as she took the book from his hand. “Bye,” she whispered to the both of us as she left the room. I continued to watch her as she walked down the dorm hallways, noting how her miniskirt clung tightly to her curves and framed her body well.

I looked down at my boobs, and I bit the inside of my cheeks, wishing they were a tad bit smaller in size. “Are you coming in?” Jason asked as he moved away from his door right when Celina disappeared.

“Oh, yes.” I excitedly rushed into his dorm room, closing his door. I pressed my back against the door and took a deep breath in. He picked up some things around his room and threw them all on one chair. I'll fix that later, but first, the great news. “So, something great happened today,” I said as I walked further into the room.

“What?” he asked as he picked up his phone and scrolled. A small smile grew on his face as he looked at me, and my heart skipped a beat. “You went shopping for better clothes?” he teased, and I scoffed, shaking my head.

“Not that, silly!” I waved my hand. “I got an internship at the International Institute for Sport and Human Performance! I start this summer!” I squealed as I clasped my hands against my chest, waiting for his reaction.

He knew just how much I had been wanting this. It was all I could talk about for months, and now that I had received it, I was feeling highly blessed and favored!

“Naomi, I thought we agreed it’s too far away.” He frowned as he put his phone away. Huh?

“Yeah, we did, but I’m the one that’s going.” I pointed to my chest, praying deeply that he would see this had nothing to do with him, and all I needed was his support.

“Bro, then what about me?” he asked, his eyes becoming glossy.

“It’s only for ten weeks, Jason,” I reasoned, my voice suddenly giving out as I stared into his eyes. All those emotions that were whirling in his eyes, and yet none of them were happy for me. “It’s not like I’m leaving forever!” I smiled, hoping he could share my excitement.

“Ten weeks is forever for me without you!” he yelled back, his nose flaring, and I was taken back by his reaction. “Baby, I thought we were going to spend the holiday together,” he whispered as he walked toward me.

“But Jason, I told you that I wanted to go for this internship.” My lips quivered. Why is he acting like this? We had discussed what we’d be doing for our summer holiday, but nothing was confirmed just yet.

So why was he acting as if everything was already confirmed, and by whom?

“Is the internship more important than me?” he breathed out as he sat down on the edge of the bed, running his fingers through his straight blonde beach hair.

“What?” I whispered, confused. What did that have to do with anything? “Jason, this internship will open doors for me—opportunities that many really suffer for. If I’m able to do this now, once we’re done studying, it would be much easier for me to get a job with them,” I explained, and he nodded slowly, clenching his jaw.

“So, I don’t matter to you? You think I won’t provide for you?”

“That is not what I’m saying!” A lump was gradually growing in my throat, and I could feel tears building up in my eyes. My ears were also starting to get hot, and I didn’t understand why he was making it such a big deal when it really wasn’t.

TEN WEEKS ISN’T A LOT!

“Then what are you saying, Naomi? It seems to me you have made up your mind about not spending your holiday with me.” He shrugged as if he was giving up.

“No!” I breathed as I walked closer to him. “That isn’t true.” I shook my head.

What am I saying? Why am I saying that? I did make my mind up about it, didn't I?

“I want to spend my holiday with you, Jason. You know I do,” I said softly as I sat down next to him and held his hands in mine.

“How can you do that, if you’re all the way on the other side of Chicago?” Valid question; it would be stupid to travel back and forth from here to there every day, and it would totally take a toll on me. Not only physically, but financially as well.

“I just wanted to tell you the good news about an opportunity I got—nothing is confirmed yet.” I said, swallowing deeply. Why am I lying?

“So you’re not going?” he asked excitedly, and I nodded. This lump hurt so much. “I knew you loved me,” he breathed as he wrapped his arms around my shoulders and pulled me closer. “You know I love you, right?”

“Yeah,” I whispered as I blinked away tears. It was fine, really. I would be spending my holiday with someone I loved, so it really was okay with me. “I love you, too,” I said as we pulled away from the hug. He pressed his lips on my cheek and smiled brightly.

“Just so you know, I’ve also been thinking about some stuff, and I’m saying this out of love.” He grabbed his phone and scrolled on it for a bit.

“Hmm?” I tilted my head to the side, anxious about what he was going to say and why he needed his phone to tell me.

“You know we go out a lot—” No, you go out a lot. “So I was thinking that perhaps, in order to make you look worthy and respected of being my girlfriend, maybe you could start dressing like this?” It didn’t sound like a suggestion; it felt like he was telling me to change.

“Like what?” I whispered, suddenly feeling conscious. He showed me the pictures on his phone, and it was Celina. The girl that was here earlier. In the pictures, all her clothing was quite short and revealing. I listened to him as he went on and on about how he preferred her type of clothing over my overalls and sweatpants. He found it to be sexier, and my style to be boring.
