When I arrived at my dorm, my phone immediately rang, and I noticed it was a call from Dad. Switching on my laptop, I sighed as I settled on a game of baseball, and I could hear the commentators from a distance as I answered the call.

“A great pitch from Harris, and…”

“Hi, Daddy,” I answered, staring at the screen that was suddenly becoming blurry.

“So? What was the good news you wanted to tell me?” he asked excitedly, and I felt a warm tear slide down my skin.

“Oh,” I whispered as I hugged my pillow. “I came out as the top student for the last semester again,” I lied smoothly, and my Dad chuckled. It was easy to tell that he was really impressed with me.

If he knew what I’d done, he would be really disappointed in me.

“That’s my girl! I’m so proud of you, pudding.” He heartily chuckled, and more tears fell out of my eyes.

Why does it hurt so much?

“I knew you could do it, girl!” I heard Mia cheering along with my Dad, and he proceeded to gloat about how smart he was when he was in college, and that I took after him.

It wasn’t true. He wouldn’t give up his internship. That’s just something he wouldn’t do.

Chapter 18

Alexander

“Naomi?” I called out from the other side of the bathroom door. The water turned off, and her soft voice answered. I could tell she had been crying, because her voice was a bit hoarse.

“Yes?”

“I’ve left you some clothes here.” I placed the smallest clothes I could find in my closet on the chair and excused myself after she thanked me.

Why does this feel so awkward? Perhaps because it was the first time she had been in my apartment. I had never anticipated that the night would end this way… her ending up in my apartment.

This was the only place I could think of bringing her because her jerk of an ex really shook her after we met. I had just turned around for a second and there he was, already speaking to her, and I could tell she was stricken with fear. Her trembling hands were the reason I acted impulsively.

I hadn’t intended to pull her closer to me and kiss her in front of him, but he’d pushed me. I could tell it surprised him to see her with another man that he’d assumed was her father.

For fuck’s sake, I was not that old, nor did I look that old either. How could he not notice how young my skin looks? I looked younger than my age; it was all people told me whenever they saw me. Shit, I’ve seen the content posted on social media and comments under my pictures.

I had not reached the stage of being a silver fox just yet, and when I did, I just knew I would obviously excel at it as well.

“Uhm, Alexander?” her soft voice called from behind me. Still holding onto the kettle, I turned to face her, and I coughed. The action caused me to spill some of the water onto the floors, splattering the hot water all over my feet. “Oh my God, are you okay?” She rushed to my side as I cursed the water.

I thought the clothes would fit her.

“Why aren’t you wearing pants?” I coughed as I cleaned up the water, and she pouted as she stood up and lifted her shirt, showing me the folded shorts that almost fit her perfectly.

“I am,” she giggled as she let go of the shirt and it hid the shorts that she wore. “You’re kinda very big,” she whispered, raising her eyebrows, and I copied her actions, tilting my head to the side.

“All of me?” I asked, and she rolled her eyes as she smiled.

“Seeing that you’re okay, I’ll be in the living room.” She turned to walk away, and I chuckled dryly as I put my hands on my waist. She better mean all of me.

I filled our mugs with hot water, and I carefully walked to where she sat, scrolling away on her phone. “Here you go,” I whispered, and she looked up, smiling softly. My heart skipped a beat, and it suddenly became more difficult for me to breathe.

“Thank you,” she muttered as she took the cup from me and immediately took a sip. She widened her eyes, as if questioning why I was staring at her with mortification.

“Isn’t it hot?” I whispered as I sat my mug down on the coffee table. She shook her head and took another sip. What the fuck was wrong with this woman? The water had just boiled, and she was already drinking it as if it wasn't hot at all.

I sat down on the same couch she was sitting on because it was my favorite couch in the whole house; I didn’t intend to get close to her. I’d positioned the Scandinavian gray couch in the middle of my apartment so I could have a perfect view of the tall windows that looked out into the city, including the kitchen.
