He finally asked me to break down my professional title to him, and I was glad to see him understand and not take offense to it anymore. I explained that I still had to get my doctorate in order to be referred to as a psychologist.

Alexander even explained to me how and why he started playing baseball; he thought it would form a bridge between him and his father, but of course it was a waste. But he’d also ended up falling in love with the game, until recently. I learned about his two sisters and the angel nephews and nieces they had blessed him with.

He admitted he would love to be blessed with more nieces because the boys were trouble, but his sisters had vowed they were done making babies, and if he or his parents wanted any more grandbabies, they would have to pop them out themselves.

Seeing this side of Alexander was new to me, and I didn’t want the night to end just yet. He seemed so happy… I liked it.

“You ready to leave?” he asked as he got up and held his hand out for me. I happily accepted his hand. “Let me quickly greet Gary.” He pointed to a desk far away, and I was grateful he didn’t pull me along with him. “You can wait for me by the door.” He pressed another kiss on my head, making my heart skip another beat.

“Naomi?” My blood went cold, and fear instantly creeped up in me as I met his blue eyes. My mouth dried up as he walked toward me. Has the ventilation always been poor in this building? Why were my hands shaking so much? Gripping my fingers, I squeezed them tightly, hoping and praying to God that I was only hallucinating. It must have been the wine.

I want to puke.

“Oh my God! It is you!” He awkwardly patted my arm, smiling kindly as if he was always like this. “I saw you sitting with that man, but I thought I was deceiving myself!” He looked me up and down as he licked his lips. I inwardly shrank as I noticed his gaze. He wasn’t going to insult me, was he? “You look hot.” The way he said it sounded like he couldn’t believe it. “Really hot.”

I can almost taste the puke; it’s slowly moving up my throat, and it burns.

Why was he talking to me? Why was he pretending as if everything was okay with us? It might have been okay with him, but it was pretty far from okay with me. “He’s so old,” he leaned in to whisper as if it were a secret joke between us.

“Naomi? Who’s this?” Alexander finally returned. He put his jacket over my shoulders, immediately covering me. I looked up at him desperately as I moved back into his body. It finally felt like I could breathe.

“Is this your father?” he asked as he pointed to Alex. “I’m Jason.” He extended his hand, and Alexander stared at it silently before shaking it. “It’s crazy we’re only meeting now. Naomi never introduced us when we were dating.” He smiled as he stared at Alexander.

Jason was a fucking asshole, and he just couldn’t stand the fact that I was with someone else instead of groveling up to him. Alexander did not even look older than 35. So why the fuck is he suggesting he’s my father?

“Hmm,” Alexander hummed as he pulled me to his side, pressing his lips on mine. “There must be a reason why, don’t you think?” He looked at Jason with his eyebrows raised.

All these emotions weren’t good for my health. I was pretty sure my eyes were sparkling.

“Oh?” Jason whispered as he took a step back and looked at the both of us. “Naomi, you’re da—” Alexander tightened his arms around my shoulder as he interrupted Jason.

“Goodnight, Jason,” Alexander said as he gently pulled me past Jason.

I had never been so grateful toward Alexander before, but I just wanted to hug him right then.

I wrapped my arms around his waist and pressed my head against his chest, breathing him in deeply. It was crazy how I felt safer with a person I had only known for three months compared to someone whom I had known for years.

Alexander soothingly ran his fingers down my hair as I continued hugging him.

I definitely did feel appreciated tonight.

Chapter 17

Naomi

Four Years Ago

“Yes, Daddy. I’ll tell you the good news when I get to my dorm.” I giggled as I stood in front of Jason’s dorm, my fist hovering over his door.

“All right, pudding, make sure you get home soon.” He sounded a kiss through the phone and I laughed, mimicking him. Locking my phone, I pushed it into my bag and finally knocked on the door. My heart pounded, and the excitement was running through my veins. Fuck, this was the best part of my second year. I felt exhilarated!

“Jason? Open up!” I knocked once again, feeling the urgent need to immediately tell him about the good news I’d received today. I was head over heels in love with him, and to think he was the first person I’d chosen to share the news with before my father just showed how serious I was about this relationship.

I think he just might be the one I marry. Just like Mom and Dad had met in college and fell in love, eventually having me.

The door opened, and instead of the bright blue eyes that I fell in love with, I met these dull gray eyes staring at me. She smiled as she moved her hair behind her shoulder, and I smiled back curiously. Who was she?

“Celina? Don’t forget your books.” Jason appeared with said book in hand, and a relieved breath immediately left my lips. They were probably working on a project together.
