“That’s because I don’t want it to fly out of my hands again.” I laughed, and he cleared his throat as he distanced himself from me this time.

“Okay, be sure to swing the bat, not your entire body, okay?” Yeah, that made total sense.

“I’ve got this. I’ve seen you do this many times,” I said as I swung the bat, only to find myself spinning along with the bat.

What the fuck just happened?

I could hear Leo’s cackle from behind me, and Aaron bit his lip, bowing a bit with his shoulders shaking.

“You’ve got that?” he asked as he took a deep breath in. I looked at him, and I could feel my cheeks starting to burn. Oh God, could the ground open up already and swallow me whole?

“How do you expect to know how to bat when you don’t even know the ball moves?” His voice startled me, and I quickly turned around. Was my excitement that obvious? Judging by his smirk, I could tell he saw how happy I was in that moment he showed up. “Why aren’t you wearing batting gloves?” he asked as he took the bat from my hands and threw it on the ground, inspecting my hands.

“It’s okay, we weren’t playing seriously,” I told him, and I could see his eyes looking at the person behind me.

“I’m sorry, Naomi.” Aaron chuckled awkwardly as he scratched the back of his head. “I forgot about the batting gloves.” He raised his hands, and I shook my head.

“It’s totally okay, see? My hands are okay.” I raised my hands to show him, but I could see the darker tint of pink on my hands. “It’s totally okay.” I laughed, and he hesitantly looked at Alexander.

“If you want to learn how to swing a bat, you should know how to throw a ball,” Alexander said as he passed me the ball and slipped his pitching glove on my right hand. How does he know I’m left-handed?

“Oh, come on. Everyone knows how to throw a ball.” I rolled my eyes, and Leo cackled again.

“Sweet Naomi sure knows how to do everything.” He laughed, clapping his hands, and Aaron sat down next to him.

“Is that so?” Alexander’s voice asked deeply as he stood next to me. “Pitch the ball, then,” he commanded, and I squinted my eyes. He really thought I didn't know how to pitch a ball?

I threw the ball with all my might. I was quite impressed to say it actually reached pretty far. The silence that met my ears made me turn around to face the guys in anticipation. Weren’t they supposed to be cheering for me right now? Instead, they stared at me quietly.

“Naomi?”

“Hmm?” I looked up at Alexander, and he looked at the ball where it rested on the ground.

“That wasn’t even thirty feet; half of what the pitching distance is,” he explained, and I looked back at the ball, pursing my lips together.

“Then what is it?” I whispered as I shuffled closer to him. Earlier on I’d thought I was embarrassed, but it did not measure anything like how I was feeling right then.

“About fifteen feet,” he whispered back, leaning down so that the other players couldn’t hear, but I was pretty sure they figured it out.

“Oh.” I licked my lips and looked at him. “That was a warm-up shot.” I stared into his eyes, forcefully telling him to agree that indeed it was a warm-up shot.

He chuckled awkwardly as he stood up straight. Looking at the other players, he repeated what I said.

“Oh, yeah. That makes sense. Warm-up shot!” Leo agreed, and I smiled at all of them. Had I just threatened them with more sessions? I did. I fucking did.

Alexander taught me how to hold the ball, varying from the different methods on which pitches were better and which to use if you were trying to win. According to him, the four-seam fastball was the best to use on a new batter; it intimidated them, and he absolutely loved to see them shaking.

That was when I realized that Alexander just might be a ruthless person to play against, and I found it hot.

Chapter 16

Naomi

Why do I feel like a teenager that’s sneaking out from home just to go spend some time with her boyfriend? I mean, I knew Alexander wasn’t my boyfriend; however, when he called and asked me to go on a date with him out in the city, I was so hesitant to say yes, and he told me not to think too hard about it and just give him an answer.

And of course, I said yes. That was why I felt like a teenager; I was not supposed to be doing this! Regardless of how I was feeling, all I knew was that I was looking extremely gorgeous and luckily no one would ask me where I was going since Dad and Mia had gone out on their date.

I grabbed my handbag and quickly made my way downstairs after receiving the text from Alexander saying that he had arrived. After locking the house, I walked toward his car and, to my surprise, he was getting out of his car and standing by the passenger side.
