“What about the other players, like Jeff for example?” he asked, watching me carefully, and I nodded. This might go on forever. Jeff was quite popular amongst the women around here.

However, soon I would love for there to be some progress between us. The time just wasn’t right for him yet.

I understood.

Chapter 15

Naomi

I scrolled tirelessly on my phone, and once I’d had enough of social media, I stared at the time and sighed once again for the umpteenth time today. I had no sessions scheduled, nor did I have any appointments outside work, because let's face it—I didn’t even have friends!

I looked out the window and exhaled a long breath as I looked at the boys running around on the field looking so excited and as if they were having fun, while I was slaving away to just boredom.

Once again, I looked at my social media. The same boring posts of my classmate’s marriage, babies, and what their husbands had bought for them came up. I groaned as I locked my phone and dropped it on my work desk. I looked outside the window once again. I got up and left my office, heading for the field.

I guessed I could just watch them at practice again. I strolled over to the coach's side as I made it outside. I greeted him and, of course, as always, he energetically asked me if his boys were being a pain in the ass and whatnot, and I answered honestly.

They were.

“Was the office so boring for you that you had to come all the way down here?” he asked, laughing, and I giggled, nodding and kicking the dust as I stared out into the field. My eyes actively searched for him, but he wasn’t there yet.

I hadn’t seen him the whole day, and I was feeling some way about it, which I shouldn’t because—you know—he was my enemy. However, I’d gotten so used to his presence, it felt really weird when he didn’t show up with only two cents worth of sharing.

I didn’t mind it, especially since he had shared so much on that drunken night.

It had really broken my heart to pieces to hear him say he didn’t like playing anymore and he just wanted his contract to end already. To lose love for something that you hold so special to your heart could be really painful.

“Naomi!” I looked to my left, and Aaron waved his hand. I waved back, thinking he was just greeting me again. “Come over and play with us.” He raised the bat, and I shook my head.

“I’m okay, thank you!” I shouted, and they all tried to convince me to come over and play. I laughed and waved my hands, signaling that I was okay.

“Come on now, you’re just going to leave them hanging, huh?” Coach asked me as he stared at his players. “They look so desperate. Go on now.” Anyone could see he had a soft spot for them and, no matter how hard he was on them, he must’ve really loved them.

“Are you sure it’s okay?” I asked, and he nodded.

“It’s not like all the players are here yet, so you might as well go have fun.” He clicked his tongue, and I knew he was talking about Alex not being there just yet. I laughed as I walked over to where Aaron stood with the other guys.

“So you finally decided to come out and play, huh?” Aaron asked as he passed me the bat.

“Yeah, Coach said it was okay to indulge you guys for some time.” I laughed as I gently tapped the base of the bat on the ground.

“We sure owe him for that.” Aaron laughed as he stood next to me. “Let me teach you how to hold it correctly.” Jeff chuckled dryly as he got up, shaking his head.

“Someone might get moody if he sees you here,” he emphasized as he looked at me, and I stared at his retreating frame. Did he know? Jeff was an attractive guy, and 89% of the time, I couldn’t understand him at all. Hence why he was one of the few people who I just had to have sessions with twice a week, not because he was rude and unwilling to participate—God, no.

Just because I found him confusing.

“Have fun, Miss Collins.” And he was one of the people who actually called me by my title, and I respected him heavily for that.

“Just ignore him,” Aaron said as he showed me how to raise the bat and hold it above my shoulder. “He can be quite confusing at times.” He chuckled, and I giggled.

“You don’t say,” I whispered as I swung the bat and watched it fly out of my fingers. Aaron and I stared at it silently before we both broke out into laughter. “What just happened?” I should be feeling embarrassed for failing to do such a simple thing, but not a bone in me found it embarrassing.

“Your fingers weren’t gripping it tight enough,” he laughed as he placed the bat in my hands, and moved my fingers into specific parts of the bat. He looked into my eyes, and I stared at him, confused; why was he still holding onto my fingers? “Is it tight enough?” he asked, and I nodded. “Does it feel comfortable?”

“Yes,” I confirmed as I flexed my fingers, and Aaron snorted. I looked at him silently, and he shook his head.

“I’m sorry, you just seem so serious.”
