"Very true."

"Okay, I need to go, Vinnie. I have a brunch date with Delancy."

"Okay, I'll get back to you if I hear anything."

"Thanks, Vinnie."

I hung up and blew out yet another breath of release. Being a mafia boss was not for the faint of heart. It took stamina, strength, and a drive to be the best. Not many men could handle it. Maybe that was why there were not that many family heads. Just a lot of worker drones.

I wasn't sure which was better.

Chapter Sixteen

~ Delancy ~

I sighed heavily as I walked past one of the workmen replacing the old windows. I was glad they were going in, but I was tired of bumping into construction people every time I stepped out of my bedroom.

To be honest, I didn't like strangers in my home. It unsettled me. I knew it was due to the work that Alejandro did. There was a part of me that was terrified something would happen to him or me.

There were times when I wondered if I had been dropped on my head. Alejandro and I had been married for exactly eight days and my heart was already speeding up with excitement as I headed downstairs to see him.

How stupid could I be?

Yes, we were married. Yes, we had agreed to work together so that we both could get what we needed out of this marriage. And yes, sex between us was off the charts.

That did not explain these growing feelings I was starting to have for the man. For a mafia man. A man I had never met before I married him.

I had to be out of my mind.

Still, the man was sexy as hell, and he played the happy husband well. There had been several social media incidents to back that up. In the last week, I had been taken out on dates and romanced, photographed being hugged and kissed, and gifted with numerous presents.

I was particularly fond of the diamond earrings.

Alejandro was doing everything he had said he would do. He had even agreed to attend one of my grandfather's charity functions. I had tried to tell all that that would entail, but he still agreed.

Which explained why there were two very nice custom-made black tuxedos hanging in the large walk-in closet of our bedroom suite just waiting for us to put them on.

I was headed for the kitchen to grab something to eat, but changed directions when the doorbell rang. I was kind of surprised really. I didn't know the doorbell had been repaired.

Hugo answered the door before I could reach it. I had actually been warned not to answer the door, but it was kind of ingrained to do it when someone came calling.

I stopped at the bottom of the stairs, crossed my arms, and stared at the stranger standing on my doorstep. With his dark brown hair, brown eyes, and tan skin, I could tell he was definitely of Spanish origin. He looked a lot like Alejandro in that respect, but that was where the similarities ended.

Alejandro was handsome, rugged. He had an air of sophistication, but it was a quiet elegance. Anyone looking at him could see his strength, his power. It was just in the way he entered a room. He drew people's attention.

This guy looked like Guido the killer pimp. He even had a multitude of gold chains hanging around his neck, rings on several fingers, and his hair was all slicked back with some sort of gel.

This was the type of guy I imagined when I thought of the mafia and that did not give me the warm fuzzies.

Why was he standing on my doorstep?

When he pushed past Hugo and walked inside the house, I stepped forward. "Can I help you?" I asked.

The condescending look in the man's eyes as his gaze roamed over me from head to toe made my gut ignite with anger. He even snorted as he looked away from me, dismissing me as if I was insignificant.

"Where is that little piss ant, Hugo? I know he is here somewhere."

My eyebrows rocketed to my hairline. "Excuse me?"
