"Yes, Jefe."

"I also need you to bring the car around in about thirty minutes. Delancy and I will be going out for brunch. See to it that the limo is ready and a car of guards to follow us."

"I'll see that it's done, Jefe."

I waited until Hugo left my study before giving Vinnie a call. Thankfully, I had gotten his number when we had all met, as well as Dmitri's. "Vinnie. It’s Alejandro Díaz. I was wondering if you could get a message to Angus King for me?"

"I can, yes. What's the message?"

"I'm not sure if he's just waiting for a flight or what, but Juan Martinez is stay in the Marriot Hotel next to the JFK airport. It could be nothing, but I still have some of my men watching him. I just thought King would like to know."

"I see," Vinnie replied. "Well, I will certainly pass on the message to King. He might not do anything, but it's better to let him know just in case."

"That was kind of my thought as well."

"Have you heard from Spain yet?" Vinnie asked. "My grandfather said he talked to them."

My heart skipped a beat. "No, nothing yet."

I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

"If you don't hear from them in the next few days, give me a call and I'll talk to my grandfather. Maybe he can light a fire under their asses."

"I'd appreciate that. I'd much rather be dealing directly with Spain than dealing with my grandfather. I'd prefer to cut all ties with him if at all possible."

"You mean act independently from him?"

"Well, it makes sense, doesn't it?" I asked. "New York and Columbia are a very long ways from each other. There's no reason for me to report to my grandfather only to have him deal with Spain when I can do it directly."

"He won't take it well," Vinnie said.

"No, he won't," I replied. "Especially since I think he is cutting off a percentage from the top."

Vinnie's gasp of shock and outrage was understandable. He more than most knew what that meant. "Is he insane? If Spain ever learns of this, they'll flay him alive and slowly."

"I can't say I'd be really upset about that, Vinnie. He might be good at leading his branch of the family, but only if you fit into his little ideal of what a mafia man is supposed to be like. Deviate from that and you are considered an abomination, not good for anything but guard duty and kill work."

"Maybe I'll mention something about that to my grandfather when I next speak to him. If he happens to mention it to his old friends in Spain, maybe they will start digging into it. It might give them the incentive to cut Brooklyn free."

"It also might give them the incentive to bury me."

"Which is why you should talk to Spain sooner rather than later. If they know you want out from under your grandfather before they get word of his misdeeds, it will go better for you."

"Yeah, maybe." I didn't relish the idea of calling Spain. Sure, I wanted to make a deal with them, but I didn't actually want to talk to them. Mostly because I didn't know who I could trust. I didn't know if any of them were old friends with my grandfather and would turn on me the moment I said something.

"Who is your grandfather in contact with?" I asked. "I'm not really sure who to talk to in Spain and I don't want to talk to the wrong person if you know what I mean."

"I do." Vinnie chuckled. "I'll get a name and number from my grandfather and get back to you."

"I would appreciate it, Vinnie."

"No problem, Alejandro, and maybe once you get this all settled, you, Dmitri, King, and I can all sit down and work out a territory treaty. It would be good for all of us."

"Not Hu?"

"We can invite him, but I don't think he will come. Hu tends to stick to Staten Island."

"We should invite him just to keep the peace, especially if the other heads are meeting together," I stated. "If he chooses not to come, that's on him."
