"You will behave," I whispered to his ears alone. "You will not like what happens if you do not."

Martinez was still here. I could see him sitting at one of the tables that surrounded the dance floor, two of his bodyguards standing stiffly behind him. I had no doubt he was waiting to see if I changed my mind.

I had not.

"We will talk later," I stated. "Let's just get through this first."

Delancy stared at me for what seemed like forever before giving me a single nod. I did not like the smile that crossed his lips. It didn't reach his eyes.

We danced for a few more minutes before the music changed and other couples came out onto the dance floor. Delancy and I stayed for one more dance before I let him away from the crowd to a table set up just for us.

When Delancy reached for a glass of champagne, I handed him a glass of water. He shot me an irritated glare, but took the water and drank it. For the rest of the evening, I carefully monitored his alcohol intake.

I did not need him drunk.

"Delancy, my boy."

Delancy cringed at the loud words aimed in our direction, so I doubted I was going to be thrilled to meet whoever spoke them. I turned to see an older man with slicked back graying hair coming toward us with a drink in his hands.

Well, a drink sloshing all over his hand, but same thing.

"I didn't expect to see you here, Father," Delancy said as he leaned into my side. I don't think he was even aware that he was doing it.

"How could I not attend my only son's wedding?"

"Of course." Delancy grimaced. "Is mother here as well?"

"That bitch," the older man scoffed. "She's too busy sleeping her way through those party boys she hangs around. She doesn't love you like I do."

Oh boy.

I stood up so quickly that I startled both Delancy and his father. To reassure my new husband, I gently laid one hand on his shoulder while holding the other one out. "I'm Alejandro Díaz, Mr. Matisse. It's good to finally meet my husband's father."

It wasn't really, but politeness and all that.

When Delancy glanced up at me, I winked at him. I was amused by the shock on his face. I doubted he had heard of me since I had spent the last ten years in Columbia, but he would know all about me soon enough.

At least he finally knew my name.

Chapter Ten

~ Delancy ~

I would give just about anything for my father to simply disappear from the world at the moment. He could even take me with him. Not because I wanted to spend any time with him, but it would save me from the embarrassment that I knew was coming.

On the upside, now that I knew my new husband's name, I had more questions for him. A hundred more questions.

I wanted to start out with asking why he was doing this. Was someone forcing him as I suspected? If so, maybe we could work something out. Just because we were married on paper didn't mean we had to stay that way. We didn't even have to live in the same house.

Yes, that was a perfect plan. I just had to get Alejandro to agree to it. I'm pretty sure he would agree. Who wanted to be married to someone they had never met before?

I certainly didn't.

"Delancy, darling!"

"Oh god," I whispered to myself when I heard that high shrilled voice. My eyes briefly closed as all my hopes for a peaceful wedding flew right out the window.

Before my mother could reach me, I opened my eyes. I stood quickly and scooted closer to Alejandro. I knew nothing about this man, but he was bigger than me and that meant shelter in my terrified heart.
