Relief flooded me with his words. She was okay. That was all I needed.

“Nice call on Bryce, by the way.”

“Bryce?”

“Yeah. You shot him. Don’t you remember?”

That didn’t sound familiar, but that wasn’t a huge surprise. “No.”

“After you were shot, you looked at Bryce and fired a single shot into his head. Killed him instantly.”

“Why?”

“Well, that tends to happen when you put a bullet in someone’s head.”

This cryptic shit was getting old. “No, I mean, why did I shoot him?”

“Not sure. You saw something or put something together. It turns out that Bryce was behind the entire attack. He was the one after the information on Ben Crosby. We’re not sure how he found out, and now we never will. Not that it matters. With him out of the picture, the threat against Wren is gone.”

That was a relief. “Where is she?”

“You know, technically, you were fired. Do I still have to pay your medical bills?” he grinned.

“You sanctioned the trip.”

“I did, but I never rehired you. It’s like you were a contract hire.”

“I don’t remember negotiating pay.”

“We’ll figure it out.”

I smiled as my eyes fell heavy again. “Where’s Wren?”

“Lock practically kicked my ass when you were brought in. He said I didn’t keep you from deviating from the plan. That man and his plans,” he laughed, shaking his head.

“At least no napkins were sacrificed in his plans.”

“Napkins?”

I chuckled, remembering how he used to plan out seating charts on napkins. “It’s a thing.” Then I remembered my original question. “Where’s Wren?”

“You know, I was thinking that maybe you should take a break when we get home. Sit out a few missions before you get shot again.”

Sleep was threatening to drag me under, but I wouldn’t allow it. He was deflecting for some reason, and I wouldn’t let the fog take over until I had my answers.

“Where’s Wren?”

“I was just saying?—”

“Cash,” I snapped with more force than I realized. “Where is she?”

He sighed, taking the seat beside me. “She’s gone.”

“What do you mean?”

“She was here. She stayed until you were out of surgery. I think…She was really broken up over your condition.”

“And then she left?”
