“Yeah, boss.”

“If Edu threw the tracker out of the plane, why is the tracker moving at a running pace toward the nearest town?”

The blood drained from my face, and this time, I spun around and glared at Scottie. “Must be a dog.”

“A dog found a microscopic tracker and decided to run around with it?” Cash said. “That’s what you’re going with?”

“I—There was a giant bird?—”

“Brock! What the fuck is going on?”

“Okay, it’s not really as bad as it sounds. Scottie played a practical joke on us, and Edu thought it was real and jumped out of the plane. But don’t worry. He had a parachute.”

“Obviously, or he wouldn’t be running!”

I winced at the anger in his voice. “Boss…I know you’re pissed, but leave Betty in your pocket. There’s no need to put her on the box.”

“Brock, I swear to God, if?—”

“What’s that, boss?” I shouted. “I can’t—Bad—talk—later!”

I hung up, chuckling as I tossed my phone on the dashboard, then kicked back in my seat, ready for the drive.

“What the fuck was that?” Lock asked.

“Hey, you didn’t want to do the talking,” I retorted. “And you said not to put Scottie on the phone. I did the best I could.”

“That was your best?” he snorted. “If you’re ever taken hostage, there’s no way you’ll survive.”

“I really doubt that’s true,” I grinned. “I’ve got a charm that no one can deny. I’d have those bastards eating out of the palm of my hand.”

Lock shifted into drive. “Let’s just go get Edu before he finds himself in any trouble.”

“Hey, what are we gonna tell him about why we didn’t jump out of the plane with him?”

He looked at me like I was stupid. “Obviously, we’ll tell him the truth.”

“Yeah, but…” I jerked my head back at Scottie. “Aren’t you afraid for his life?”

“True,” he nodded. “So, maybe we tell him as soon as he jumped, the plane reset or something.”

“Hmm-hum-him-mum!” Scottie shouted behind his tape.

“Yeah, I agree with him.”

“What did he say?”

I shrugged. “Doesn’t really matter. Edu’s gonna kill him anyway.” I twisted in my seat to look at him. “Now, would you prefer we tell Quinn you died in a training exercise or that you were killed in action? Both have their merits, but personally, I would rather die in combat. Then again, there’ll be fewer problems with the other ladies if you die in a training accident.”

“How do you figure?” Lock asked.

“Well, in a training accident, we could say it was his fault. He vomited all over the control panel, it shorted out, and the plane crashed. That way, it’s his fault and not ours. Quinn will be mad at him, and the other ladies won’t fear for their husbands’ lives because none of the rest of us puke in the air.”

A smile touched his lips as he turned to me. “I like it. It lets the rest of us off the hook.”

“Exactly, and they can’t be mad at us for letting Scottie die.”

“I’m telling you, it’s a foolproof plan.”
