I could never forget the way his eyes devoured me. I felt special and wanted by him. By only him. No one had ever looked at me like I was special. I knew I was beautiful and desirable, but knowing it isn’t the same as feeling it.

And that’s why it was so wrong when Bryce proposed.

“There’s my girl.”

I jerked my head up and saw Fox strolling over to me with a grin on his face and his wife on his arm. “Fox.”

“Why are you worried?”

“Why are you calling me your girl?” I glanced at his wife. “You’re going to piss her off.”

He tossed his head back and laughed. “I have lots of girls. None of them mean anything more than a good friend. Anna knows I belong to her.”

I was so overcome with emotion that I tossed myself in his arms, completely wrapping myself around him. I felt slightly bad for stealing him from his wife, but I felt like I was on the verge of collapse.

“Thank you for coming,” I whispered.

“Hey, don’t sweat it,” he said, prying me off him. He frowned at me. “Why are you so sad?”

“Because…he was shot.”

He laughed again. “Right, but it’s Brock. He’ll be fine.”

“You don’t know that.” My lip quivered as I tried to hold back my emotions.

“He survived me throwing a knife at him. I’m sure he’ll be fine. You saw how he hung onto that cliff.”

“You threw a knife at him?” Anna gasped. “Why would you do that?”

“He was supposed to move! I had that guy. Besides, it’s his own fault for ending up in the hospital. He can’t dodge a bullet?” He snorted. “Totally his fault.”

“He was shot three times!”

“Oh. Still, I say he should have moved.”

“Fox,” Cash interrupted. “Maybe lay off the reprimands until after he’s out of surgery.”

“Right,” he said, cocking his finger at Cash like he was shooting him.

Frankly, I’d seen enough guns to last a lifetime. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get past this, but I knew now that I never would have been happy with Bryce. Speaking of…

I turned to Cash. It was best to distract myself. “Did you find out why he shot Bryce?”

Cash winced. “Are you sure you want to know?”

“I need to.”

He cleared his throat, motioning to the chairs. “Maybe you should sit down.”

“Maybe you should tell me.”

“Trust me, I’m thinking of you. You tend to pass out a lot.”

That was true. I took a seat, not wanting to embarrass myself further.

He sat down beside me and took my hand. This couldn’t be good. “Rae—our IT tech—tracked down the man who broke into your father’s house. At first, we didn’t get anything on him. He’s just your average criminal, much like the men who tried to take you tonight.”

“Okay…”
