“I need Fox! Where’s Fox?”

“I’ll get him, okay? Just calm down.”

The doors of the ambulance slammed shut and I jerked my head in that direction. He was gone, loaded up and leaving. What if I never saw him again? What if the last thing I said to him was his name? That was it? I didn’t get to tell him how much I loved him?

The staggering realization that this could be the end nearly had me passing out. I loved him and he was about to die. My body swayed and my knees buckled. If it weren’t for Edu, I would have hit the ground. The last thing I saw before I passed out were Brock’s blue eyes looking up at me.

When I came to, Cash was leaning over me, his face grim as he stared at me.

“What happened?”

“You passed out.”

“That happens a lot,” I realized as I sat upright. I pressed a hand to my head, belatedly realizing I had Brock’s blood on my hands.

“Wren, I’m sorry, but Bryce is dead.”

“He shot him,” I said mechanically, remembering how Brock raised his gun and pulled the trigger.

“I don’t know why,” Cash said. The concern in his voice was more than just for Brock’s life. He was worried Brock had lost it and killed Bryce in a fit of rage. Somehow, I wasn’t upset.

“Brock wouldn’t have pulled the trigger without a reason,” I said, pulling Cash’s attention to me. “I don’t know why I know that, but I do.”

“He saw you,” Cash said, his lips pulled in a tight line. “He…he saw the engagement.” He lifted my finger, raising the gigantic ring into view. “Maybe…”

“Don’t say it,” I argued. “He wouldn’t have done it. I know him.”

“You haven’t known him that long.”

“I’ve known him long enough,” I snapped. “He wouldn’t have killed Bryce for no reason.”

I hated the way Cash’s eyes watched me. “You don’t seem too broken up over Bryce’s death.”

I swallowed hard, knowing there was something seriously wrong with me at the moment. “That should be a bad sign, right?”

“You’ve had a shock.”

“Right, but still…I should feel something…”

“Let’s get you to the hospital.”

I grabbed his arm, suddenly terrified to move. Everything swirled around me again and I worried I would pass out again, but I pushed past the dizziness. This was too important. “Tell me he’s going to be okay.”

“Wren—”

“Just tell me,” I choked out, barely holding it together. “Please…lie to me.”

He nodded slightly. “He’s going to be fine.”

“He’s going to be fine,” I repeated. Shoving to my feet, I pulled back my shoulders and did my best not to fall over. I pushed a strand of hair behind my ear, pausing as my fingers brushed the lobe of my ear. Brock hated me with my hair up. I pulled the pins from my hair, tossing them on the ground as my hair fell around my shoulders.

“Are you ready?”

I nodded and followed them to the waiting car. Somehow, I would get through this. Brock wasn’t dead yet. He would live and…I didn’t know what would happen from here, but I knew my life would never be the same.

I stared at the dirty spot on the carpet in the waiting room. It was the only thing keeping me sane at the moment. It had been hours and we still didn’t know if he was going to make it. I felt lost as I waited around all these men who knew Brock so well. I was like an imposter, here for Brock, but never really having taken the time to know who he was. My love for him was based purely on lust and passion.

And the way he looked at me.
