“They were hired by Bryce.”

I shook my head, not understanding. “Bryce hired them to break into my house? Why?”

“Because he needed something off your father’s computer. It’s not online, so they needed to get onto the actual computer. He hired the best.”

“What did he want?”

The way his eyes flicked to Fox’s face, I knew it was bad. “Your father had…some information on his computer. Something that would make Bryce a lot of money if he got his hands on it.”

“But Bryce has money?—”

Cash was instantly shaking his head. “After Brock shot him, we looked closer at him. He needed the money. His father decided he was spending too much money and cut him off. I guess he figured this was a good way to stay flush and no one would get hurt.”

I shook my head, unable to believe it. “He was going to kidnap me.”

“He wouldn’t have hurt you,” Cash added.

“Right, because he needed to marry me.”

He didn’t argue with that. I stared down at the ring on my finger, feeling like it was tainted. What did he have to do to afford this ring? I didn’t even like it. He had failed miserably at picking out something I would like. I pulled it off my finger and shoved it in my pocket. I wasn’t engaged to Bryce, and that ring would never grace my finger again.

I walked into the ICU, terrified of what I would find. The monitors beeped, thrusting me into this new reality. Brock had almost died. Technically, he did die on the table. Twice.

But the doctors never gave in, and Brock didn’t either.

“Talk to him,” the nurse smiled. “They can still hear when they’re unconscious.”

I slowly looked over at her, feeling like I was in a dream. How had this become my life? Just a few weeks ago, I had never heard of Brock, OPS, and had never even considered I might have a stalker. Now, my world was flipped upside down. What used to be normal was now a foreign thought in my mind.

I couldn’t look at him yet, not when I knew it would devastate me. I took in the room and the private nurse in the corner watching his vitals. Her only job was to watch him and make sure he was okay. I hadn’t realized how useful my money could be until this moment.

“He’ll be okay.”

The gruff voice nearly made me jump out of my skin. I was on edge and nothing about this situation would make me feel better. Not until he was out of this hospital.

Cash sat in the corner, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees. He looked exhausted, much like I felt. But nothing could help me sleep when I knew Brock was lying in this bed because of me.

“Fox said that to me once,” I finally said.

“Fox has a way of always looking on the bright side of things.”

I took a tentative step forward, gently sliding my fingertips over the blanket covering Brock’s feet. “It’s strange,” I said quietly. “He always seemed so invincible.”

“He is. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be lying in this bed. He’d be bleeding out on the ground,” Cash answered.

I still hadn’t looked at his face. I gently squeezed his leg, just to reassure myself it was really him under there. I took a deep breath and finally looked up at his pale face. Deep bruises darkened the skin under his eyes and the scruff coating his jaw that I’d come to love now made him look worn out.

A small gasp left my lips, followed by a mewling sound I didn’t recognize. I clasped my hand over my mouth and fought the tears forcing their way out of my eyes. I didn’t hear Cash move, but the moment his hand landed on my shoulder, I lost my control.

Tears flowed down my cheeks unchecked. My shoulders shook uncontrollably, and when Cash ran his hand up and down my arm in a soothing manner, I nearly fled the room. He turned me, pulling me into his arms as he rested his chin on my head.

“Hey, he’s gonna be okay.”

“But he almost wasn’t,” I sobbed.

“No. No, he almost wasn’t.”

“It’s my fault.”
