She stayed silent.

“Wren, I really am sorry about all this.”

“If you were sorry, you’d take me home.”

“I can’t do that. I need you to understand that you’re still in danger.”

“That’s what you keep saying, but no one’s following us.”

“That’s because we ran. You were vulnerable at your house.”

I watched as she fiddled with a small chain around her neck that dipped below her shirt. Fox procured clothes for her yesterday, and while I was happy she was clean, I missed seeing her curves on display in that nightie.

We didn’t speak the rest of the way to the safe house. The silence was so uncomfortable that even I wanted to jump out of the car to escape the tension. I had the feeling that this was par for the course for Wren.

I pulled down the driveway of the secluded house and stopped at the back of the property where we were hidden from the main road. Turning in the seat, I waited for her to look at me. When she finally graced me with a look, her eyes were filled with anger, betraying the indifference she tried to show.

“I need to check out the inside. You’ll stay here with Fox until I know it’s safe.”

She didn’t answer, but her eyes flashed in irritation. Since I wasn’t getting anywhere with her, I woke up Fox.

“Hey, we’re here.”

“Awesome. Do you think he got my Funyuns?”

“I doubt it.”

Fox slumped in his seat as if his lack of Funyuns was the worst thing in the world. “Fine. I can find them on my own.”

“I’m going to check it out. Keep her safe.”

He rolled his eyes at me. “No, is that what we’re doing?”

I shoved my door open and got out, drawing my weapon. I headed up the steps to the second floor. The lower level was just the garage, but I didn’t dare park in there. While it provided cover for us, it also would make for a difficult getaway.

I hurried across the deck to the door. The entire house was filled with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the lake. It would be dangerous as hell to be that exposed, but we were in the middle of nowhere. I had to hope no one would come looking for us out here.

I entered the code Dash had given me, then slowly opened the door, stepping inside. The only sound was the quiet hum of electricity. Moving silently, I cleared the entire floor, only satisfied when even the closets were empty. Holstering my gun, I headed back outside and tapped the window, letting them know it was clear.

I opened Wren’s door for her, holding out my hand to help her out. She ignored my gesture and shoved past me. But before she headed inside, she stopped and stared at the lake, taking in its beauty.

“Where are we?” she finally asked.

“It’s better if you don’t know that.”

Turning to me, she rolled her eyes. “Why? Are you worried I’ll get to a phone and call my father?”

“That’s one concern.”

She walked past me as if she were royalty, holding her head up high as she ascended the steps. Not even the gorgeous house sparked a reaction from her.

I followed her upstairs and into the house. She looked around, but it was clear nothing would satisfy her. The truth was it didn’t matter what I did. She didn’t believe there was a threat to her life, and nothing I said or did would alleviate the tension between us. I needed to end this and send her home.

“Fox, check the perimeter,” I said as he strolled through the door.

“Man, this place is sweet. It reminds me of the place I took Anna when I kidnapped her.”

“Fox,” I growled, needing him to shut up.
