“Ah, see, it was really secret answer number D.”

“D is a letter!” I snapped.

“Sure,” he snorted. “In your world.”

“How is any of that a game? It doesn’t make sense!”

“It does to me,” he argued. “And since I made it up, it only has to make sense to me.”

“But I really was kidnapped,” I screeched. “And if I went by your reasoning, I was taken as a willing participant for my own safety, but you said that wasn’t right either. It was secret answer D! Which doesn’t make any sense at all!”

“You know, you’re getting awfully worked up over a game. Maybe you need to chill out and watch a movie.”

“I need to chill out? You’re making up games left and right and driving me insane.”

“I actually only made up one game. And if I had to choose a side, I would say right.” He shot me a toothy grin. “Do you want to know why?”

“If you say it’s because you pull to the right, I’ll slug you.”

His smile faded into a frown. “Was that a dirty reference?”

It had been, but the idea that I even thought it made me blush furiously. I wasn’t supposed to be thinking dirty things. That was for classless people. I was the epitome of style and sophistication. Then again, I was currently lying in bed with a psychopath and his sidekick in a dirty motel after eating something that made my stomach turn painfully. Maybe I was losing it. Wasn’t there something that happened with kidnap victims when they started to commiserate with their kidnappers? That was me. I was slowly falling under their spell. And if I didn’t find a way out soon, I would be one of them.

“You know, I think there’s hope for you yet.”

“I don’t want there to be hope for me,” I snapped. “This is not my life, Fox! I don’t belong in a motel room watching movies and eating Chinese food with men I don’t know!”

“You know me,” he grinned. “We met at the gala.”

“Fox, you’re being stubbornly obtuse.”

“I’m being me. See, the trick is to always throw people off.”

“This!” I pointed at him. “This is what I’m talking about! You’re trying to trick me. You’re trying to get me to enjoy myself, and I’m not! Can’t you see that? This isn’t supposed to be where I end up.”

“That’s a very backward way of looking at things. All roads in life lead to where you should be. It’s just up to you to choose the right road.”

I rolled my eyes at him. I really couldn’t take another minute of this. I just wanted to be at home, enjoying my nice, warm bath. I wanted a normal, quiet dinner with my father. I wanted silly lunches with women and shopping trips where I spent way too much money. I needed my luxury back. And the longer I was with these men, the more they would think that I was assimilating to their way of life and that this was okay.

“Fox,” I said with a sigh. “I want to go home.”

BROCK

I want to go home.

Her words echoed through my head as we drove to our next location. Dash came through, getting me a place to stay that wouldn’t be a total disaster. The vehicle wasn’t as luxurious as our minivan, but at least Wren wasn’t walking.

I glanced in the rearview mirror at my unwilling captive in the back seat. She’d been staring out the window for hours, refusing to speak to me. Fox was asleep in the seat beside me after being up all night on watch, so I didn’t even have a buffer.

I looked at her again, and this time, she met my gaze in the mirror.

“How much longer?”

“Another ten minutes,” I answered, hoping I would get a relieved smile out of her. Instead, she just continued to stare out the window.

“You’ll like this next place. It’s much better than the motel.”
