It’s hard to change the mantras that have run through my mind for so long.

“Talk to me, honey.”

I close my eyes, not sure what to say. Last night gave me hope, and I’m scared to believe in it because I’ve been disappointed so many times before.

“I’m scared this is a dream.” The words tumble from my lips, honest and raw.

His thick, dark brows lift a fraction, and then his gaze drops to my lips. “It has been my dream. For years.”

“Hunter. . .”

“I’m serious, Piper. About you. Us—”

“But—”

“We’ll talk to your parents together. A united front. And if it goes poorly, we can run away to LA together.”

He’s too good to be true. So steadfast and understanding. Calm and just. . . a problem solver. Such a good man.

The corners of his sinful mouth curve up just enough to melt me. Even the thought of facing down my daddy isn’t enough to dampen the hope blooming in my chest. I squeeze his shoulder.

“You can’t do that. You have a business here.”

“That I can hire someone else to manage.”

Even as he says the words, I’m shaking my head.

“Pie—” He leans close, pressing his forehead against mine. “Listen to me, honey.”

I stare into his hazel eyes, wishing and hoping. Years of yearning compound until my heartbeat thuds heavily in my ears.

“I love you. I’m done denying it to everyone, including myself.”

“What if—I don’t want to come between you and Dad.”

He takes a deep breath. “You’re. . . we’re not up for negotiation anymore, honey. I love you more than anything.”

His eyes implore me to believe him. To believe in us. They’re suspiciously bright, and I crawl into his lap, straddling his thighs. His big hands close over my ass, holding me tight.

Feeling his certainty is beyond delicious. I’m actually light-headed from the elation. My heart is starting to believe, but my mind races with questions.

He’s just so steady. So freaking steady. My preppy, solid, unflappable lumberjack.

“I love you too. So much it hurts. Please be sure.”

“Sweetheart, I spent the last eight hours making love to you every way I know how and filling you with my cum.” My skin scorches at the raunchy words. “I’m going to fill you with babies and build you the house of your dreams, and we’ll have no-clothes weekends every weekend.”

I blink at him. I hadn’t even stopped to think about protection. But I want that. All of it. Every single bit. Babies with his dark hair and sweet smile.

He must register my hesitation. “Don’t worry, honey. I get a physical every year. Nothing to worry about there. I haven’t been with anyone since we met. And—”

Shock blares through me, making me feel heavy and stiff. “You haven’t?”

He shakes his head.

“But that was. . .” My brain does the math, still not believing. “Years ago.”

He dips his head. “Yeah.” He says it’s like it’s no big deal.
