“A big one. Sir, I haven’t had a doubt about your granddaughter since I laid eyes on her. Matter of fact, I’ve never been more sure about anything in my life than I am about her.”

“Motherfucker,” the old man curses, and I have to hold back a chuckle. “Want to tell me what he did say?”

I explain the situation, only stopping for Pops to ask questions now and then. By the time I’m done, Pops is pulling out what little hair he has left, just as angry at Daniel as I am.

“So what are you going to do about it?”

“Tell her the truth.”

Pops erupts into laughter. “What a stupid idea.”

“Excuse me?”

“Two words: grand gestures. Women need to see you mean business, and words can’t accomplish that.”

“Okay, what do you propose?”

“I can’t tell you what to do. You have to figure that out on your own.”

“So you won’t tell me where she’s at?”

“Not until you have a plan.”

“Fine.” I stand and head for the door. “But I’ll be back.”

“I wouldn’t expect any less.”
