?. . .?

I wakeup not feeling Jenny at my side. When I pat the mattress next to me, I find nothing but cold sheets. Opening my eyes, I’m immediately on edge when I don’t see her either.

Maybe she’s downstairs already or in the garage? She was really excited to get started in her new space.

After using the facilities and throwing on some clothes, I set out to find my woman. Last night, I was riddled with indecision on how to handle the situation with Daniel, but after a good night’s sleep, my mind was much clearer. Fuck Daniel. She doesn’t need him or his money because she has me. It’ll take some convincing, but after I tell her about the phone call, I know she’ll see things my way. She previously told me she didn’t want to mix business with pleasure, so if I can’t get her to rethink that, I’ll find her a real business partner. I have lots of contacts, including some in the porn industry, because porn is messy, and my furniture is indestructible.

Actually, that’s not a bad idea. Plus, nothing in a porno is real, and I’ll bet that includes the jizz. Maybe they’d be interested in Jenny’s product.

There’s still the issue of Daniel taking over her company, but everyone has a price, and I’m sure I can find his. Jenny doesn’t need to know that part; I’ll simply tell her I convinced him not to be an asshole and give her ownership of a company he doesn’t even want.

It’s a solid plan.

Except Jenny isn’t downstairs, and when I go outside to check the garage, I only have to go as far as my porch because her car isn’t in the driveway. She’s gone.

Dashing back inside, I find my cell in the kitchen and dial her number. It rings twice before going straight to voicemail. I try over and over, calling and sending text messages, but I get no response. My stomach sinks as I realize she left me with no explanation.

Thinking back to last night, I try to recall if I did or said something that would piss her off enough to leave. I know I was evasive after we went to bed, but I didn’t think her response would be to run. I just needed a minute to figure things out before I brought her into it. Maybe I should’ve told her that.

Well, if she thinks I’m giving up after having a taste of her sweet, sweet heaven, she’s wrong. I just need to clear up this misunderstanding and we can go back to the life I have built for her without even knowing that’s what I was doing. All it took was seeing her in my space to realize the too-big house, the huge ass garage, the shower remodel, and even the swing outside were my subconscious’s way of preparing for my soul mate—Jenny.

Grabbing my keys, I jump in my truck and drive straight to her apartment. No, not her apartment, her old apartment. I’m disappointed to see her car isn’t in the parking lot, but I don’t let it deter me. The bad thing about us being so new is that I don’t know all the places she might hide from me, but I do have a good resource who does, and that’s my next stop.

Pops doesn’t look at all surprised to find me at his door, telling me the person I’m looking for has already been there.

“Where is she?”

“Awfully demanding for someone who misled the only person in my life who means something to me,” he says, folding his sun-spot-covered arms across his chest.

I blow out a calming breath, realizing I won’t get anywhere with this man unless I pull my shit together. “I’m sorry, I’m just worried about her.”

He assesses me for a long minute before pushing his door open all the way. “Why don’t you come inside, son?”

“Thank you.”

“Take a seat. Make yourself comfortable.”

“If it’s all the same to you, I’ll stand.”

“It is all the same to me. Sit down, boy,” he says. Feeling scolded, I do as ordered. “Now, do you want to tell me why my granddaughter showed up here in the middle of the night, crying?”

My throat closes, and I croak, “She was crying?”

“Of course she was. The man she was falling in love with tricked her into believing he wanted everything with her, then changed his mind less than twenty-four hours later.”

“What?”

“Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

“I assure you, sir, I really don’t.”

“Then why did you pull away after Daniel told you to let her go if you didn’t plan on forever with her?”

“That’s what he told her he said?” All sadness morphs into anger. I should’ve known that slimy asshole had something to do with it.

“Judging by your tone, I’m going to guess that he told my girl a lie?”
