“Let's keep going,” Alil said resolutely.

I nodded and this time, we held onto each other's hands while we went.

Perhaps Alil really was feeling a little bit better because he kept going until the sky began to lighten and a noise slowly rose from the distance.

We both stopped walking as the rumbling sound grew louder.

“What is that?” Alil asked.

I wasn't sure. It sounded familiar though.

The first sun suddenly broke over the horizon, flooding the world with streaks of pale light.

I lifted my hand, blocking my eyes as I searched.

The sound was coming from the direction of the jungle.

Finally, I caught sight of something moving across the sand at a rapid pace, heading back toward the city from far away.

My heart leaped into my throat as I realized what it was.

The human sand buggy! It had to be the same one we had first traveled in and it was right there, hopefully with everyone safe and sound inside.

I couldn't let them leave without us.

This was our salvation.

. . .

ALIL

I watched Addy as he began to run, shouting and waving his arms in desperation.

My heart was racing because I didn't know who was in that vehicle but I knew that I was still going to do everything I could to get on it.

“Hey!” I shouted, waving my arms and going after Addy.

Together we jumped and screamed until our voices were hoarse, but the damn thing kept driving until our arms fell to our sides.

“No!” Addy cried as we watched it go, hopelessness flooding us both.

Then, miraculously, the vehicle slowed down.

I gasped, not wanting to be wrong, but to our amazement, when it started to drive again, it turned in our direction and headed straight for us.

“Yes!” we cheered, and Addy turned, grinning in excitement. He swept me into his arms, twirling me and kissing me, before setting me down and frantically packing the blankets and tarp.

“Thank you, Goddess,” he muttered under his breath and then stood, pulled the bags over his shoulders and reached for my hand.

We stood there, waiting, neither of us talking.

I could feel Addy's nerves and mine were growing too. Whoever was in that contraption, I honestly hoped it wasn't the other alphas. If they didn't want to take us home, Addy would fight them. I wanted to avoid an altercation.

I squeezed his hand a little bit tighter and waited with bated breath until I could make out something of the nassa in the car.

Addy saw it at the same time that I did.
