Page 97 of Hurt Me Not

I stood immediately. “Move,” I shouted, and the ten protectors Daisy had chosen listened and did my bidding. “Shield us,” I ordered Destiny, who was a stealth fae.

We lifted from the ground and flew above the mountains into the clouds. Daisy took point, knowing where he was being held.

If a hair on Milo’s head was harmed, Amaris would perish.

We arrived at a house I’d never been to before. We landed in the backyard, and I faced Daisy.

“It’s a residence I bought.” She shrugged. “This was a just in case.”

I had to put Easton out of my mind. If my mother promised he was going to live, I knew he would.

“Where are the protectors you sent with Milo?”

“Your Highness,” one of the protectors called out. Most didn’t refer to me as such since I hated it, but in this instance I’d let it slide.

“Yes?”

“Here.” He leaned down and picked up clump of blackened gardenias. Most humans didn’t realize the aroma of gardenias had the power to render them groggy. Add some fae magic and those protectors didn’t stand a chance.

“They’re asleep,” I hissed. “Amaris is here.”

“Stealth,” Daisy whispered, and once again we were invisible to anyone looking.

Amaris would likely see us, but I was hoping it would take a little while and she wouldn’t be able to spot us right away.

Through the door’s window, I could see Milo sitting at the kitchen table, eating a cookie and talking. When I searched to see to whom, a lady stepped in. Sweet and smiling, she handed him a glass of milk.

Amaris.

“Why would she glamour herself if her intent was to hurt the boy?” Daisy whispered.

“Perhaps my father didn’t order her to kill him.”

Daisy motioned to the left, then the right, and the protectors surrounded the house.

“I’m going in; stay with me.”

“No way I’m leaving you alone with her, sir.”

I knew as soon as I opened the door they’d both see it. So I had to be fast. It wasn’t locked, thankfully. With a nod to Daisy I pushed it open, and in a flash I was beside Milo.

“What’s that?” he asked, but Amaris glared.

“Finch,” she growled and the glamour of the beautiful woman faded and the wretched fae appeared.

Milo gasped and rushed out of his chair. I removed the stealth from myself, which any could do, and wrapped Milo in my arms.

“You’re safe, Milo.”

He peered up at me with wide eyes. “Finch?”

“Hey, Buddy.”

He was examining my face, surely seeing me for who I truly was. He didn’t tremble with fear. No, he beamed.

“I dreamed about you.”

Grinning, I hugged him tightly. “I know you did.”
