“Milo?”

“He’s safe,” someone answered, but I couldn’t see.

A menacing laugh echoed through the crowd, I couldn’t see anything, though.

“Silence yourself, Manchineel,” Calantha, I believed that was her name, said.

“Do you think I would let you capture me so easily?”

“What’s he talking about?” I hissed when she pressed against my stomach.

“He manipulates, Easton. Ignore him,” Finch whispered.

Calantha closed her eyes and mumbled something under her breath.

“My mother’s gift is grand but draining, Easton. She has the ability to bring anything on the brink of death back to life. Please close your eyes, and when you wake up Milo will be here, you’ll be safe and alive.”

I tried to keep my eyes open, but it was pointless. I blinked once, twice, and then there was nothing.

CHAPTER FORTY

Finch

As my mother worked, I kept a close eye on Tru and my father. He hadn’t brought enough of his fae, and the protectors had easily overpowered his army.

He’d broken more fae laws than any I’d ever seen. Amaris and Arachnis would likely never see the light of day again…but my father, he was a king and what that meant, I didn’t know.

Speaking of…“Where’s Amaris?” Arachnis had been carted off by a few of my mother’s protectors as soon as he’d stepped back into the clearing.

Daisy lifted her head and searched. “Look for her.”

More laughter and my father, who was bound by magic, smirked.

“Do you think I wouldn’t have contingency plans?” He quirked a brow.

“Daisy, where is Milo?”

“Guarded, Finch. He’s in a safe location with ten protectors.”

“What is safe?” Manchineel hummed.

My mother’s eyes opened, and she removed her hands from Easton’s stomach.

“He will live, Finch. He needs to get home and gain strength.”

“Mother, his son. I don’t think he’s safe.”

She nodded and then gestured to one of her protectors.

“Go with Finch and Daisy to Milo’s location.” She smiled weakly at Tru, her magic drained due to helping Easton. “This sweet girl can stay with me as we get Easton home.”

I glanced at her, and she returned the expression. “I want to stay with my dad. You, you saved him.”

My mother’s eyes met mine. “He’s won the heart of a prince, of my son. He, and you and your brother, are vitally important to me now. I will always do my best to protect you.”

“Amaris is gone,” Daisy said. “We need to get to Milo.”

“Go,” my mother commanded as she took Tru’s hand. “I’ve got her.”
