Page 98 of Hurt Me Not

“Daisy brought me here, said there was an emergency with Tru. Is she okay?”

I peered over Milo’s head, where Daisy had a spear to Amaris’s throat.

“She’s okay. Dad is on his way home. He was hurt, but he will be fine.”

“What happened?” His finger slid over my skin, his face full of wonder as he examined me.

“He took a tumble. We can talk about it later.”

“Are you a fairy?”

I shook my head. “No, and then maybe yes?”

He giggled, and that little sound untangled all the worry in my stomach.

“Amaris, Manchineel has lost. He and Arachnis are being escorted to the fae realm for judgment. You too are being sent back for judgment.”

She bared her blackened teeth. “I’ve broken no laws, Prince Shitface.”

Milo turned in my arms to face her, but I dared not release him.

“You’re mean,” he yelled. “And your cookies are gross.”

She hissed at him. “You can take me to the court, but I’ll be released. I only exposed my true nature to the boy after you did.”

Daisy jabbed the tip of her spear into Amaris’s neck. “You showed the girl.”

“She never saw me.” Amaris cackled. “I will never be held; you’ll see.”

“Amaris, you are hereby held by the magic of the court. Until judgment has been placed upon you from the court, your gifts are slumbered.”

Amaris arched her body, and she released another growl. Losing contact with your magic had to be a jarring feeling, but I had no sympathy for her. It was not something Daisy—or any fae, for that matter—could do in the heat of battle, unless they felt the order granted to her through magic. The court obviously wanted Amaris for judgment.

“They’ll come for you too, Finch.”

Daisy pulled her away and outside where the other protectors waited.

“Whoa!” Milo’s eyes became even bigger as he saw the fae in the backyard.

“I’m surprised you’re not freaking out.”

He shrugged. “I knew you were magic, Finch. I just knew it.”

Once I saw Amaris slip between the veil with a couple of protectors, I stepped outside with Milo.

“Can I go see Dad now?” Milo asked.

“We’re not far. Come on.” Daisy and the protectors glamoured themselves, as did I, since we had to walk down the streets.

“So cool,” Milo whispered, earning a chuckle from everyone.

We only had to walk a few blocks and when we arrived at the house, I could tell my mother was already inside.

Stopping Milo before we reached the door, I said, “I want you to meet someone, Milo.”

“Who?”

“Someone super special…my mom.”
