He reached for Tru, but he’d never touch her as long as I lived. I jumped on his back and, as hard as I could, I yanked on his wings.

He roared. Tru was forgotten, but I hastily realized how outmatched I was as fire began to lick at my feet.

“Easton!” I could hear Finch’s screams, but I couldn’t call for him.

I pulled until we both went crashing to the ground, rolling through bushes…we were falling down the mountain. Shit.

“You can’t beat me, human.”

A sharp pain in my gut took the wind out of me. We crashed against a rock, and I peered toward the pain in my stomach. Arachnis’s nails were impaling me.

“I always win, Fireman.”

He removed his nails and stood, glaring at me with a grin. “One down, two to go, and afterward I will watch as Finch dies of heartbreak.” He sighed. “It’ll be glorious.”

I made to reach for him only for the pain to force me to crumble.

“So fragile.” He tsked. “What he ever saw in you, will always confound me.” He shrugged, and then I was alone.

I was dying, of that I was certain. I had to get to Tru, though. I searched the area for anything I could wrap my stomach with. My helmet was long gone, but my jacket remained.

I slid it off, grunting as each movement tore at my gut. It was too thick to cut through but if I wrapped it around me, it might be enough to stop the bleeding.

I worked as fast as I could. Every second felt like a year, and energy was draining from me faster than I’d hoped.

Taking a deep breath, I grabbed the nearest branch I could get and pulled myself up with a shout.

I was far from the battle, my feet ached from the fire, but fortunately I wore my boots so I had that going for me.

My hands clutching my stomach, I began to climb. I made it about halfway when someone grabbed my arm, and then another was cradling behind my neck. My feet lifted off the ground, and I was moving much faster than before.

I darted my head side to side. Fae…golden fae. They were carrying me…Was I dead?

“You’re not dead, Dreamer,” a voice close to my ear spoke.

I must’ve spoken out loud.

“You still are.” Another chuckled.

Soon I was laid on the ground, and Tru hovered over me.

“Dad,” she cried. “Oh my God, you’re bleeding. Help him! Please, help him!”

A moment later, Finch came into view. Gone was the darkness—he was once again my beautiful fae. He didn’t realize his own strength. The evil would never prevail inside of him.

“You’re so gorgeous.” My voice was all garbled.

His gaze was full of worry. He looked across from him, and that was when I realized his mother was there too.

“Can you help him?”

She cocked her head, and the jacket that was tied over my wound was removed and a rush of pain washed over me, and a moment later numbness…all pain was gone. My Finch, he was taking my pain away. I knew it in my heart.

“It’s okay. Calm down, my child.” She smiled and tenderly cupped my cheek. “It is time for you to rest.”

No, I didn’t want to rest. I needed…“Tru?”

“I’m right here, Dad. I’m safe; they kept me safe.” She gripped my hand. I had to assume she meant the other fae.
