I clutched Tru in my arms, watching helplessly as Finch gave up his entire existence to save me and my family, and anger rippled through me.

If a building was engulfed in flames, I suited up and charged through it. Fire was my beast every day, and I didn’t even flinch when I busted through a curtain of fire.

Tru sobbed against my chest, and I realized she was anchoring me in place. Fae would laugh in the face of fire…I was no match for them.

The warmth of a tear slid down my cheek as I was forced to witness a piece of my heart being torn clean from my chest.

After Manchineel sliced his hand, I knew I was moments away from losing him. But the second that rapier was gripped in Finch’s hand, it was as if every prayer had been answered.

“Get away from my son!”

The sound echoed like thunder through the mountains; even birds hiding in the canopy of trees fled.

Tru and I both arched our heads to see what or who that was.

“Oh wow,” Tru gasped. Wow was right. It was like nothing I’d ever seen. Manchineel’s fae were foreboding, but what lay before me were exquisite, terrifying…and many.

At the front stood a woman with long sage hair set in braids. She wore a golden crown of butterflies. Her dress was white, covered in resplendent armor. Behind her, every single fae was also dressed in gold from head to wings to toes…the protectors.

“Dad, who are they?”

I kissed the top of her head, relief forcing a sob from the pit of my soul.

“That’s Finch’s mother.”

“She doesn’t mess around.”

“No, baby, she doesn’t.”

Tru and I were suddenly forgotten as the earth shook and fae collided with fae.

I rolled us away from the fray. There was a huge boulder, and I scooped Tru up and raced toward it. This was a fight of magic.

“Stay low, Tru.” She did as she was told. I, on the other hand, peered up to watch what was going on.

Fae had weapons; that was easy to see. Staffs, swords, and creations I’d never seen. Woven into all of that they used magic. A fae would fly in the air and shoot ice shards through another and immediately become engulfed in flames. It was like a live heartbreaking action movie.

“What’s happening, Dad?”

“Nothing you should see, baby.”

I searched the carnage for Finch but couldn’t find him…at least not immediately.

I spotted him, the rapier still in his hands as he lunged toward a dark fae. When his opponent wrapped vines over his legs, Finch didn’t hesitate to retaliate. The fae screamed, clutching his head. My sweet Finch was a viper, that was for sure.

Once Finch had taken the fae out, I saw him searching. He was looking for me.

I stood quickly. “Finch!”

His head whipped in my direction, and the relief in his expression warmed my heart. He started running toward me.

“Dad!” Tru yelled at the same time Finch froze. What was he staring at?

“Dad!” Tru pulled on my leg and I turned, coming face-to-face with Arachnis.

“Your family has caused too much drama for my liking, Fireman.”
