“He’s got friends in high places, Miss Jemma.”

I opened the door for Doug, the orderly, to roll Milo in. Easton was waiting, mask on. He turned and his entire body relaxed the second he laid eyes on Milo.

“Hey, Bud.”

“Hi, Dad.” Milo’s gaze roamed around the room, taking it all in.

“You don’t need to wear your mask in the room, Easton—only everyone else who comes in does. You can take yours off now too, Milo.”

He nodded and removed his mask as did Milo. “Right, Dr. Perry told me that.”

“Milo’s hungry, so I was going to wrangle him up a burger and fries as soon as I get him all hooked up. Would you like anything?” I asked Easton, who hadn’t taken his eyes off his son.

“Oh, um…I don’t want to be any trouble.”

I waved off his concern. “No trouble, I’ll take care of it.”

“Okay, I can stay and eat and then, if you’re still okay with it, Milo, I was going to go get Tru and bring her home.”

Milo bit his lip and regarded me.

“I’m here all night as promised.”

“Okay.”

“Burger and fries, Dad?” I double-checked with Easton.

“Thank you, Finch.”

I hooked Milo up and got him situated. Once he was set, I told them I’d be right back and left to get their food orders in.

“Seriously, Finch?” Jemma quirked a blond brow.

“What?”

“Private nurse?”

I rolled my eyes and texted the cafeteria for Milo’s and Easton’s meals.

“You have never done this. Sure, you’ll stay with someone for a while, especially if they’re hurting or whatever, but an all-night private nurse?”

“Jemma, I like you, but I’m not going to talk about the patients I care for unless it’s necessary. Medically speaking, you have all of that available to you, but the ‘why I’m here’ isn’t anyone’s business but mine, the doctors’, and the Koopers’.”

“Oh, you’re secretive…and protective.” Jemma smirked. “Is it the sexy dad?”

“I’m returning to Milo’s room.” I wasn’t playing the gossip game. Sure, a lot of nurses did, but I truly valued humanity. It was fragile, and when I came across someone who was undeserving of what life was throwing their way, I stepped in.

Dr. Perry asking me to stay with Milo was of course the main reason I was here, but not the only one. The second both father’s and son’s emerald eyes met mine, something inside me clicked. I was where I was supposed to be.

I opened the door to Milo’s room and saw Easton trying to work the remote to the television.

“Want help?”

“I fight fires for a living—you’d think I could work a remote.”

I chuckled and held out my hand. “Hospitals have actually gotten fancy through the years with what you can watch on TV.” I pressed the menu button. “You have movies, television, and all sorts of other things. We also have video games. If you’re interested, I can have that brought in.”

“Video games?” Milo’s eyes widened, and it was the happiest I’d seen him since he arrived.
